Position Description - Industrial Engineer

Position Purpose: We are seeking an Industrial Engineer with demonstrated work and leadership characteristics to thrive in a dynamic manufacturing environment. This role involves identifying, developing, implementing, and documenting process improvements in the manufacturing process. They will indirectly manage a team and have responsibility for technical needs operations. This position demands a hands-on, experienced individual capable of managing technical and operational projects that encompass a wide range of equipment, materials, and procedural issues. The Industrial Engineer will apply principles of industrial engineering to optimize processes, enhance efficiency, and improve product quality.


Principle Accountabilities

  • Investigate and recommend equipment and processes for manufacture of new products.
  • Assist in the development and scale-up of new products.
  • Support, investigate and provide remedies for manufacturing process problems.
  • As required, establish working relationships with outside personnel to meet project objectives.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge and understanding of current products, processes, equipment, and procedures.
  • Utilizes engineering tools (FMEA, Control Plans, 55, etc.) to support efficient area operations.
  • Maintain adequate records and orderly files on all assigned projects.
  • Assist maintenance department with evaluations of equipment problems and design requirements of all equipment.
  • Assist as needed on environmental compliance projects as they relate to the process function.
  • Assist in training of production personnel and creation of supporting documents.
  • Work with operating personnel to reduce waste generation.
  • Demonstrates practical problem-solving abilities using engineering tools.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • B.S. Engineering, Chemistry or Physical Sciences curriculum. Strong preference given to Chemical Engineering degree.
  • Will consider a non-degreed candidate with a minimum of five years practical experience in related manufacturing field and a proven history of accomplishments and increasing job responsibilities.
  • Excellent problem-solving capability, initiative and both verbal and written communication skills.
  • Creative mindset with attention to detail of process, product and material design.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project).
  • Good organizational skills including ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Experience with paper or web converting, coating and/or packaging is desired.

We are looking for a highly analytical and results-oriented Industrial Engineer to drive the development of our Lean reconditioning system. In this key role, you will lead Lean transformation initiatives, streamline production processes, establish staffing benchmarks, and enhance operational efficiency to support our rapid growth. Key Responsibilities

  • Design and revise facility layouts using CAD software to maximize productivity and resource utilization.

Summary

The Regional Industrial Engineer (RIE) will work closely with all North American plants and bogs to support and lead initiatives related to SunGro’s growth, modernization, standardization, and improvement plans. The incumbent will be a strong change leader capable of effectively and collaboratively working with all levels of employees having a wide range of education, skillset, and backgrounds. To enable this, the RIE will frequently travel to SunGro plants and bogs in the New Brunswick province as well as some locations in Quebec, working closely with them to identify and execute projects with impactful change. The position will require a bilingual English/French speaking candidate who is able to translate and implement company policies, procedures, and protocols in both languages for the regions covered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
 

  • Define, manage and execute improvement projects and initiatives within region of responsibility.
  • In conjunction with plant management teams, lead the evaluation, implementation, and commissioning of capital projects.
  • Manage financial spend of capital projects to be on time and on budget at the right quality to serve the sites in region.
  • Draft and design layout of equipment, materials, and workspace to illustrate maximum efficiency, using drafting tools and computer.
  • Review budgets, production schedules, engineering specifications, orders, and related information to obtain knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures, and activities.
  • Support implementation and adoption of standardized CMMS program across all SunGro Sites, including data development and analysis.
  • Apply continuous improvement, lean manufacturing toolsets within SunGro Operations Model for Excellence (SOME).
  • Apply statistical methods and perform mathematical calculations to determine manufacturing processes, staff requirements, and production standards.
  • Frequently travel to and collaborate with bog- and plant personnel to map harvest- and peat processing steps, while identifying opportunities for improvements to increase capacity and reduce costs.
  • Confer with vendors, staff, and management personnel regarding purchases, procedures, product specifications, manufacturing capabilities, and project status.
  • Communicate with operators and management to develop production and design standards.
  • Develop manufacturing methods, labor utilization standards, and cost analysis systems to promote efficient staff and facility utilization.
  • Recommend- and implement methods for improving utilization of personnel, material, and utilities through process, system or equipment changes or upgrades.
  • Plan and establish sequence of operations from peat harvesting through processing and shipping to promote efficient utilization of assets and to achieve ideal flow.
  • Other duties as required by the business.

Requirements
 
  • Degree in applicable field, such as Mechanical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering preferred.
  • PMP designation preferred.
  • 7+ years’ experience working in a fast paced, high mix manufacturing environment.
  • Experience of managing projects over $1M per asset.
  • Hands-on, can do it attitude to get projects completed.
  • Ability to use 2D and 3D modelling software such as AutoCad and SolidWorks.
  • Automation experience with PLCs and electrical systems an asset.
  • Strong change manager with proven experience to gain buy-in from employees on process changes.
  • Good, concise, and adaptable communication skills are paramount.
  • Ability to relate process improvement and change to positive financial business impact.
  • Proven collaborator, able to work closely with a cross-functional, mixed-education team to solve complex problems with robust solutions.
  • Detail oriented with the ability to effectively communicate complex issues and solutions via simple, understandable means.
  • Frequent travel up to 75% within region. Expected to be on-site for project installation and commissioning.
  • Periodically may be required to travel to other regions of Canda and US to support other projects.
  • May be required to lift up to 25Kg.
  • Full, clean driver’s license required.

Your Impact:

You’ll be at the heart of Thermolec’s evolution, leading projects that align Lean principles, ERP capabilities, and smart factory design — while engaging people every step of the way.

Key Challenges You’ll Tackle:

• Redesign plant layout using Lean and ergonomic principles

• Lead optimization projects (VSM, 5S, Kaizen, etc.)

• Support ERP implementation and data infrastructure upgrades

• Engage and coach teams on the floor — from operators to leadership

You’re a Great Fit If You Have:

• 5+ years in industrial/process engineering in manufacturing

• Deep knowledge of Lean tools and factory layout planning

• Experience with ERP systems (Syspro = strong asset)

• Leadership, communication, and a passion for collaborative improvement

Job Description

We are currently seeking a qualified Project Engineer  to join our Industrial team, based out of Toronto, ON. The Project Engineer will be responsible for providing technical leadership to engineering disciplines on projects to ensure work plans are developed and followed consistently with the project execution plan, project job instructions; and project goals for quality, health, safety, environment, regulatory, schedule and cost are achieved. Join us in this full-time permanent  role and be a champion of diversity and inclusion.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating all aspects of engineering work on assigned projects. 
  • Engineering and discipline project design activities relating to concept, pre-feasibility, feasibility studies, EPCM and EPC projects.
  • Manages engineering teams in projects and across large studies with a project delivery focus.
  • Provides operational day-to-day leadership, support and coordination with Lead Discipline Engineers and Third Parties for arriving at responsible decisions/outcomes on engineering matters for the project, or assigned portion of the project, as required.
  • Defines and controls engineering work scope for the project or assigned portion of work based on Contract Documents. 
  • Supplies technical and general guidance on engineering-related matters.
  • Receives operational and day-to-day direction from the Project Engineering Manager and directs engineering disciplines as required.
  • Maintains contact with Engineering Management, procurement, project controls and construction and coordinates information between all parties. 
  • Maintains contact and coordination with the client, Vendors/Suppliers, Process Licensors, project/jobsite personnel, and Regulatory Agencies on engineering matters.
  • Responsible for Engineering contributions to the health, safety, environmental and quality objectives of the project.
Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering; P.Eng. in Ontario (or eligible)
  • 10+ years in project engineering within industrial/process/battery plant environments
  • Proven leadership in multi-discipline project settings
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills
