The Anishinabemowin Language Instructor will provide Ojibwe language instruction at Lakeview School.


REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

The Anishinabemowin Language Instructor reports directly to the School Principal


POSITION SUMMARY

The Language Instructor will be responsible for effective instruction, training, and evaluation of the progress of students ability to speak, read, and write in Anishinabemowin. It is essential that instructor make cultural connections to traditions, story, song and land-based learning as language learning is strengthened by the instruction associated with this role within the school.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Develop lesson plans, assessments, evaluations and provide Language Instruction for all grades assigned
  • Create and provide long-range plans to guide the instruction delivery and submit them to Principal
  • Inspire and mentor students to develop pride in their ancestral language and motivate them to use language in communications within all aspects of their daily lives
  • Collaborate with other Language Instructors and Teachers in the development of Anishinabemowin language, resources and curriculum to inform classrooms of language learning outside of Language classroom specific.
  • Provide effective classroom management
  • Develop and maintain language progress reports and term report cards on students
  • Maintains strict confidentiality of all information related to the children, parents, and staff
  • Attend workshops, training sessions, and conferences as it pertains to the program;
  • Interact with staff and community in a positive and professional manner
  • Assist in other areas as needed from time to time as designated by Principal
  • Maintains and follows internal routines and procedures for child health and safety and school wellness
  • Comply with MChigeeng First Nation Personnel Policies and Procedures as well as Lakeview School Policies and Procedures

Qualifications/Requirements

Preferred

Ontario College of Teachers Certification & QECO rating, Bachelor of Arts, Fluent Ojibwe Language Speaker, Native Language Certification, understanding of theories and methodologies for teaching Native Language and the ability to apply these to practice.

Minimum

Fluency in Ojibway Language, Anishinaabemowin Immersion Program Certificate, Native Classroom Assistant Certificate

Other

  • Knowledge and/or experience with the culture, history and customs of the Anishinabek Nation
  • Excellent rapport with young people in a mentoring role, positive interpersonal skills, and willingness to work collaboratively and in cooperation within a team environment
  • Knowledge in smart board, I-pad technology, and other technologies
  • First Aid Certificate and CPR would be an asset
  • CRC/VSS requirement must be thirty (30) days current and be original or certified copy

Position Summary

What You Will Bring:

  • Bachelors degree in French, Education, Applied Linguistics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in FSL instruction for adult learners; supervisory or coordination experience is an asset.
  • Experience working with international students or newcomers to Canada is highly preferred.
  • Effective communicator with a positive and flexible attitude.
  • Proficient in classroom technology and virtual teaching tools (e.g., Teams, Zoom, Google Classroom).

The purposes of this position are:
 

  • To provide assistance in Ojibwe Language instruction, educational programs and other learning activities for children within the policies and procedures established by Chief and Council, Chief Operating Officer and as directed by the Manager of the O’Shkiigmong Early Learning Centre

The duties and responsibilities of this position are categorized into three main functions:
 
  1. Educational
  • Responsible for providing Ojibwe language instruction for O’Shkiigmong Early Learning Centre children and staff
  • Responsible for providing in and out of Day Care learning activities for children and staff
  • Responsible for supervising children on a one on one and group basis
  • Responsible for assisting in the operation of O’Shkiigmong Early Learning Centre facilities.
  • Working with RECE’s and Supervisors based on children’s interest.

  • Responsible for all manual preparations in regards to outings taking place at Kutang Island
  • Responsible for preparing a nutritious menu for the summer program at Kutang Island with supervisor’s assistance.
  • Responsible for storage and packing of supplies and equipment
  • Responsible for all health and safety requirements during cultural activities
  • Responsible for daily maintenance of boats and island.
  • Responsible for Island grounds and structural maintenance.
  • Teepee fires and maintenance.

Summary

St. Margarets School (SMS) is Western Canadas only girl-centered, independent day and boarding school located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada on the unceded traditional territories of the Esquimalt Nations, Songhees Nations, and WSNE Nations. Founded in 1908, SMS is an international centre for girl-centered learning and leadership development, providing empowering education for girls from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 (boarding grades 712). St. Margarets School is an International Baccalaureate (IB) School offering the Diploma Programme, and we are a candidate school for the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).

The successful candidate will bring a strong background in evidence-based instructional practices and proven ability to create engaging, inclusive and inquiry-driven learning environments. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence in curriculum delivery in French and all areas of global language learning. Fluency in both oral and written French is essential, as well as familiarity with adaptive teaching strategies to accommodate a variety of student learning styles.


Experience teaching within the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme in the Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an essential asset. Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create, implement and deliver a motivating and engaging French language curriculum to students in Kindergarten through Grade 8, in alignment with the principles and framework of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme.
  • Design and deliver engaging, inquiry-based lessons aligned with the IB philosophy, fostering international-mindedness, student agency, and a girl-centered approach to learning.
  • Incorporate differentiation strategies to support a diversity of learning styles and integrate creativity, variety, and real-world relevance to support meaningful student engagement.
  • Monitor, assess and support student learning through ongoing feedback and regular collaboration with teachers and parents.
  • Ensure timely and consistent communication with parents via formal and informal conferences, weekly newsletters, and a digital portfolio.
  • Prepare comprehensive student progress reports, including formal written assessments consistent with IB assessment strategies and criteria, and SMS Assessment Guidelines.
  • Foster an inspiring, inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages every student to develop to their full potential, guided by the IB learner profile and Approaches to Learning (ATLs).
  • Collaborate with the IB Coordinators and other faculty to ensure French language instruction supports transdisciplinary units of inquiry and aligns with IB PYP expectations.
  • Attend regular collaboration meetings, faculty meetings and school-required events.
  • Work with the team of Language teachers and school leadership to tailor the languages program to the unique needs, interests, and ambitions of SMS students, while maintaining alignment with IB objectives.


Required Education & Experience

  • Current and valid teacher certification through the BC Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Bachelors degree specializing in French, or a combination of relevant coursework; additional qualifications in education or language acquisition considered an asset.
  • 3+ years of current school experience as a French specialist.
  • IB PYP Category 1 training or PYP French Subject training preferred.
  • Experience teaching within an IB (PYP) setting strongly preferred.
  • Experience working in an inquiry-focused setting and incorporating IB Approaches to Teaching.


Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Familiarity working in an inquiry-focused setting and incorporating IB Approaches to Teaching.
  • Proficiency and fluency in spoken and written French.
  • Familiarity with the IB philosophy and framework, including the IB Learner Profile, Approaches to Learning (ATL), and transdisciplinary learning models.
  • Familiarity with a variety of teaching strategies for girl-centred education.
  • Knowledge and evidence of a range of formative and summative assessment strategies that inform instruction and support student growth.
  • Superior communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills in building relationships, working with and interacting positively with colleagues, students, and parents.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team with a commitment to designing inquiry-based units and collaborating with PYP teachers on transdisciplinary units of inquiry.
  • Willingness to participate in school-wide professional development opportunities, including IB training and ongoing programme development.
  • Embody a growth mindset and willingness to grow professionally as an educator.
