The Lab Tech I plays a key role in executing daily laboratory operations by performing sample generation, sample preparation, basic assay procedures, and equipment maintenance in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Test Methods, and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). This entry-level position supports multiple functions across the laboratory, ensuring the timely and accurate completion of projects within a GLP and/or ISO17025-compliant environment.
Technicians are expected to escalate issues, follow established quality and safety practices, and contribute to maintaining a clean, safe, and organized laboratory space.
Primary Responsibilities
Sample Generation and Preparation
- Setup, calibration, and verification of smoking machines and other analytical equipment used in sample generation and preparation.
- Generate and prepare samples following approved SOPs and Chain of Custody requirements.
- Prepare and label solutions, media, reagents, and glassware for downstream use in assays.
- Perform tasks such as transferring, diluting, digesting, sonication, evaporation, centrifugation, and filtration of samples.
- Prepare impingers, flasks, autosampler vials, and associated materials for analysis.
- Operate shakers, centrifuges, and other general-use laboratory equipment.
- Perform simple or routine steps in assays under direct supervision (e.g., colony counting, microplate reading, slide scoring).
- Accurately record raw data, maintain laboratory logbooks, and complete necessary worksheets.
- Prepare media and associated materials for use in Toxicology analysis.
- Conduct and document equipment calibration, verification, and routine maintenance.
- Participate in environmental monitoring, housekeeping, laboratory upkeep and receiving of materials.
- Clean and maintain lab glassware and workstations.
- Implement the Laboratory Quality Policy and perform their duties in accordance to existing project specific requirements, current Test Methods, study plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
- Comply with Health & Safety policies and procedures and wear required Personal Protective Equipment at all times.
- Ensure adherence to good documentation practices (GDP), GLP and ISO17025 requirements.
- Report deviations, equipment malfunctions, and non-conformances to Team Leads or Supervisors promptly.
- Participate in safety inspections, corrective actions, and training activities as required.
- Follow assigned production schedules and timelines.
- Work cooperatively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in team huddles and safety briefings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education
- Required: Diploma or Degree in a Biology-related discipline (e.g., Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, MLT).
- Preferred: Training or experience in laboratory work, sample preparation, or mechanical/technical tasks.
- Alternate: Equivalent combination of education and experience as determined by Human Resources and Department Director/Manager.

Skills required but not limited to:
As an Instrumentation Technician you will:- Repair of all smoking machines and peripherals in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and recommendations.
- Monitor and adjust the Controlled Environment Rooms (CERs) using chamber control program.
- Schedule maintenance and verification of sample generation related equipment and instruments (e.g. Puff Volume Meters, oil pumps, etc.).
- Address repair requests from supervisors and technicians via internal ticketing system for instruments and smoking machines (Puff Volume Meters, Puff engines, pumps, shakers, etc.).
- Write and review standard operation procedures such as Calibration, Verification & Maintenance (CVMs) or Quality Standard Forms (QSFs).
- Commission and de-commission equipment and instruments.
- Manage the inventory of supplies and instruments specific to smoking machines and CER’s.
- As requested, design and modify smoking machines or equipment, to meet analytical needs.
- Assist Supervisor with various requests (e.g. building or modifying equipment)

**Job Summary**
Works collaboratively with all healthcare team members toward the best outcomes for the patient and the organization. May perform phlebotomy services, specimen collection/handling, utilize knowledge of department procedures and computerized Lab Information Systems (LIS), and support patients with information and direction utilizing laboratory services. Assists lab staff with delivering patient care, distributing lab results and reports, and operation of laboratory equipment.
**Essential Functions**
+ Prepares, delivers, and picks up items in accordance with health and safety regulations and laboratory policies to ensure specimen integrity, quality patient care, and caregiver safety.
+ Collects and labels specimens for requested testing, processes specimen according to established guidelines and completes documentation for the specimen.
+ Performs data entry of patient demographics and tests ordered. Performs all paperwork, technical, and nontechnical procedures required to process and submit specimens.
+ Receives, handles, sorts, processes, or packages specimens.
+ Receives and makes telephone calls and uses computer terminal and reference guides to provide information and answer questions from clients and patients, regarding specimen requirements, test results and other client requests.
+ Performs waived testing as assigned. Recognizes abnormal results and follows up as defined in standard operating procedures.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.

**Experience**

**Job Summary**
Works collaboratively with all healthcare team members toward the best outcomes for the patient and the organization. May perform phlebotomy services, specimen collection/handling, utilize knowledge of department procedures and computerized Lab Information Systems (LIS), and support patients with information and direction utilizing laboratory services. Assists lab staff with delivering patient care, distributing lab results and reports, and operation of laboratory equipment.
**Essential Functions**
+ Prepares, delivers, and picks up items in accordance with health and safety regulations and laboratory policies to ensure specimen integrity, quality patient care, and caregiver safety.
+ Collects and labels specimens for requested testing, processes specimen according to established guidelines and completes documentation for the specimen.
+ Performs data entry of patient demographics and tests ordered. Performs all paperwork, technical, and nontechnical procedures required to process and submit specimens.
+ Receives, handles, sorts, processes, or packages specimens.
+ Receives and makes telephone calls and uses computer terminal and reference guides to provide information and answer questions from clients and patients, regarding specimen requirements, test results and other client requests.
+ Performs waived testing as assigned. Recognizes abnormal results and follows up as defined in standard operating procedures.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications**
**Education**
+ High School Diploma Preferred: or equivalent
**Experience**
+ Phlebotomy training or experience may be required or preferred for some positions and
+ Preferred: Prior clinical laboratory experience
**Credentials**
+ Preferred: Upon Hire Drivers License Valid driver's license for driving positions
**Skills**
+ Able to approach, communicate and positively interact with patients and health care professionals while performing their duties, frequently under stressful conditions. (Required)
+ Able to work without supervision but know when to consult with supervisory personnel for assistance in determining appropriate actions. (Required)
+ Able to use the electronic laboratory information system. Must perform work activities in accordance with established policies and procedures. (Required)
+ Able to recognize the various levels of service (routine to critical) demanded of the laboratory and prioritize work and adjust working style to accommodate said demands. (Required)
