Job DescriptionAccountabilities:
- Checks unverified laboratory results for accuracy prior to verification; investigates unexpected abnormal and/or spurious results according to laboratory policies, processes and/or procedures
- Performs operation, maintenance and calibration of laboratory analyzers and equipment
- Monitors quality control results and responds appropriately to discordant results
- Ensures specimen collection, integrity, transport and storage is appropriate for sample processing and analysis
- Refers discordant findings to appropriate personnel for further follow-up
- Assists at bone marrow collections; check specimen for acceptability; processes in-house and send-out test requests
- Monitors temperature and expiry dates of blood and blood component products to ensure products are acceptable for transfusion; discards outdated or compromised products as required
- Checks operating room list to ensure blood products are available for required surgeries
- Issues blood and blood component products
- Actively participates in the Laboratory quality management system and process improvements
- Performs other procedures and duties as assigned
- Graduate of an accredited medical laboratory technology program or equivalent education (CSMLS)
- Must be registered and in good standing with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario
- Minimum two years recent chemistry, hematology and transfusion medicine experience in a hospital laboratory setting is preferred or must demonstrate successful completion of all relevant education/refresher courses within the past two years
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and maintain high level of productivity, competence and professionalism
- Able to evaluate and analyze information to facilitate continuous improvement of the Laboratory process in the interest of quality patient care
- Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational and communication skills
- Proven ability to be a team player; strong interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of Meditech, Paradigm and other Microsoft Office computer system

Summary
Reporting to the Group Leader, the Laboratory Technician is responsible for preparing and pre-processing fresh samples, as well as supporting experiment preparation by managing solutions, consumables, and labels. The role also involves preparing solutions and contributing to the maintenance and upkeep of equipment, as well as receiving reagents and materials and handling inventory management.
Responsibilities
More specifically, you will participate in the following:
- Perform sample preparation such as cell isolation from blood samples, cryopreservation, thawing, and counting;
- Provide general support in experiment preparation such as plastic identification and label preparation;
- Prepare solutions and reagent aliquots;
- Perform equipment maintenance, calibration, and cleaning;

Education
- DEC in Laboratory Technology, preferably with a biotechnology specialization.
Main Requirements
- 1 year experience in a laboratory, an asset;
- Experience working in a biological safety cabinet under sterile conditions;
- Experience with PBMC (isolation by Ficoll or CPT, cryopreservation, thawing, counting with hemocytometer), an asset;

The Lab Coordinator is responsible for managing the flow of samples through the laboratory. This role acts as a liaison between the laboratory and Client Services, ensuring timely sample processing and addressing any operational issues that arise. The Lab Coordinator also supports laboratory operations in the absence of the Lab Supervisor or Manager.
What you will be doing:
- Track and monitor the progression of samples through the laboratory.
- Address any concerns or delays in the sample processing workflow to ensure timely completion.
- Serve as the primary point of contact between the laboratory and Client Services.
- Assist in conducting root cause analysis for operational issues.
- Provide recommendations to Lab Management for process improvements and issue resolution.
- Provide supervision and guidance to laboratory staff in the absence of the Lab Manager or Supervisor.
- Experience with GC/MS/FID, IC/ICP OES, and Spectrophotometer testing.
- Ensure smooth daily operations, adherence to procedures, and timely task completion.
- Perform laboratory analysis and technician duties as required to support team functions
- Ensure compliance with Quality Control (QC) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Maintain ongoing monitoring of QA/QC data, including charts, records, and other documentation.
- Minimum Science Technical Diploma, BSc, or equivalent experience
- 3+ years of hands-on laboratory experience in a senior role.

The Laboratory Services department is seeking individuals that are energetic, motivated and value contributing to a team environment. Detailed qualifications are listed under each of the below position links.
The Dr. Peter D. Pan Regional Laboratory at Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH) provides support to physicians, midwives, nurse practitioners, and their patients. In partnership with Lifelabs, the laboratory provides testing services 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to in-patients, registered out-patients and community patients in all laboratory disciplines: chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunohematology, surgical pathology and cytology.
