This is an exciting opportunity for a practical, results-focused lawyer to join the legal department of a growing company in the important real estate development sector, building and operating purpose-built rentals from dirt to door.
In this role, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to build a legal career in an important and growing real-estate space while helping to deliver the housing that Canadians need.
Your contributions to the team include:
- Provide accurate, timely and practical legal advice to all departments within the organization
- Manage external litigation counsel in all areas of litigation including construction and personal injury
- Draft and review litigation documents including notices of civil claim and responses to civil claim
- Work closely with other members of the legal team
- Draft legal agreements and other legal documents
- Manage risk as a facilitator of business operations
- Actively participate in building and maintaining our positive office environment
What you need to be successful:
- LLB/JD or equivalent
- Minimum two years post-call experience
- Member in good standing of the Law Society of B.C. or ability to transfer from other provincial law society
- Preference for experience in corporate commercial, construction, litigation
- Critical thinker who takes a practical approach to problem-solving
- Ability to manage multiple work assignments and competing priorities under tight timelines
- Team player, but with the ability to work independently when required with minimum supervision and a high degree of personal initiative

Reporting to the VP Legal & Corporate Affairs, goeasy is seeking a Legal Counsel to provide legal and regulatory advice and guidance to the goeasy team on a variety of matters, including: contract review and contract lifecycle management, contract negotiation and interpretation, and compliance with all applicable laws that impact business operations.
What will you be doing?
- Identifying, addressing, and managing business needs in support of strategic objectives, while providing support and triage of matters to the VP, Legal & Corporate Affairs.
- Leading the legal process and review in contract lifecycle management, and collaborating with cross-functional teams throughout the vendor lifecycle - including vendor selection, onboarding, contract review and approval while recommending process enhancements.
- Responding to regulatory inquiries by working with business partners to understand and improve internal processes.
- Leading legal reviews and providing business support in areas such as consumer protection, customer resolutions, and other relevant subject matters.
- Conducting legal research on issues impacting business operations, in collaboration with the Director, Government Relations & Legal.
- Building strong working relationships across all levels of the business to provide legal guidance, influence, and support - becoming a trusted advisor within the organization.
- Keeping the Chief Legal Officer informed of legal issues, risks, and opportunities within your areas of responsibility.
- Advising on complex legal matters and tailoring recommendations to align with business goals and public company requirements.
- Monitoring legislative and regulatory developments, and supporting the VP, Legal & Corporate Affairs and Chief Legal Officer in developing business-focused responses.
- Supporting new and existing service offerings across business lines, including partnership initiatives and strategic proposals.
- Assisting the Chief Legal Officer with corporate governance and policy matters, as needed.
- Leading and supporting legal proceedings involving the company to protect its interests.
- Providing practical, business-oriented legal opinions across a wide range of functional areas.
- Supporting the Legal & Corporate Affairs team in maintaining and administering corporate records and registrations, especially in the context of a public company operating across all provinces.
What experience do you have?
- 2–4 years of relevant legal experience, preferably within a dynamic corporate legal department.
- In-house legal experience supporting financial services and/or public companies is preferred.
- Regulatory experience is considered an asset.
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario, with demonstrated expertise in applicable areas of law.
- Proven entrepreneurial mindset, with a track record of challenging the status quo and introducing innovative legal solutions and best practices.
- Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments, partner groups, and member organizations.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
- A proactive self-starter with the ability to assess needs, develop strategies, and lead implementation efforts independently.
- Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, with a team-oriented approach and readiness to pivot as business needs evolve.
- Strong judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to influence senior leadership.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software tools.

Job Description:
AltaLink’s Law Group is currently looking for a candidate to join their team as Legal Counsel. The successful candidate will have a carriage of files that are straightforward to medium complexity and work with more senior lawyers on complex files. The Legal Counsel position has a key role in providing assistance and advice to AltaLink’s various business units on a range of legal and business matters focused primarily on corporate and commercial matters, with additional exposure to regulatory matters. This position also provides supervision and guidance on legal practice/procedure to legal and other staff as required.
Responsibilities:
- Reporting to the Director, Law and Corporate Secretary, the successful candidate will:
- Support related portfolios on corporate governance and compliance matters in the context of applicable legislation, regulation and provincial directives. The candidate will also participate in AltaLink’s financing transactions and public disclosure / securities law matters and contribute to key regulatory matters.
- Provide high-quality and timely legal advice, strategic advice, research, opinions, guidance and service on matters pertaining to corporate governance and compliance matters.
- Support the establishment and maintenance of processes and tools to facilitate retention of knowledge, information and decisions made with respect to legal advice provided, and the consistent application of such advice across the enterprise.
- Contributes to the maintenance, periodic review and enhancement of corporate policies and procedures.
- Draft and review contracts, memoranda of understanding and other legal documents.
- Conduct, and where appropriate, oversee legal research to provide legal advice and opinions on a diverse range of complex legal matters.
- Be accountable for matters within an assigned portfolio of legal work grouped by business unit, program, or project, as assigned by the Director, Law and Corporate Secretary.
- Work with external counsel on corporate governance, compliance and transactional matters and, when drafting documents, research legal matters and provide instructions to external counsel.
- Make presentation on current legal issues to relevant internal AltaLink stakeholder groups.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- A license to practice law in Alberta.
- A university degree (LLB; JD) in law and a current member of Alberta law society.
- 2-5 years of related legal experience.
- Proven ability/experience in the above noted responsibilities.
- Negotiation, interpersonal, and communication (both oral and written) skills to prepare legal documents.
- An understanding of regulatory or energy law would be considered an asset.
- Ability to build relationships across functional groups.
- Demonstrated initiative and confidence.
- Ability to provide practical legal advice and assess risk.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and work as a team player.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work in a time-sensitive environment.
- Proven track record of good attendance and performance.
