Support Manufacturing Initiatives across Central Kitchens
Responsible for developing, configuring and optimizing industrial processes from inception through to start up and certification.
Deliver against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and ensure a quality service approach to all employees, customers and suppliers.
Direct Initiatives
Responsible for the process design, operation and implementation of new and existing plant equipment.
Involved in researching and making recommendations on equipment for process improvement.
Improve industrial processes in order to maintain efficiency, reduce cost, improve sustainability and maximize profitability.
Develop, configure and optimize industrial processes from inception through to start up and certification.
Develop best practices, routines and innovative solutions to improve production rates and quality of output.
Assess, report on, promote and carry out process improvements initiatives. This includes analyzing data, conducting risk assessments and monitoring processes to collect data and make recommendations.
Support the implementation and ramp up of all new products, including production ramp up, and Standard Operating Procedures with the Commissary teams, representing the production and food experience teams.
Identify industry best practices and how they could be incorporated into Sobeys central kitchen business model.
Support the Central Kitchens in achieving their financial targets, continuously look to improve efficiency, reduce labour costs and improve capacity.
Key support in launching new products in Central Kitchens. Aligning equipment, process, labour and product to achieve the best possible product outcome on spec and on budget.
Manage project specific budgets, costs, and deliverables.
Liaise with service providers, technicians and equipment manufacturers for support on commissioning, repairs and upgrades.
Food Safety requirements
Responsible to support implementation and ongoing compliance to all food safety programs, quality programs, plant sanitation and regulatory requirements for the facility
Support in maintaining site certification to a GFSI or other approved food safety standards.
What you have to offer:
Requires completion of a Bachelor of Science degree (Engineering preferred) along with 6-8 years relevant work experience or a combination of education and work experience.
Proven work experience in process engineering / manufacturing
Excellent technical skills and knowledge of process related standards. Lean Manufacturing an asset.
Working knowledge of process engineering software packages along with experience using CAD or AutoCAD.
Knowledge of maintenance processes, equipment and materials.
Excellent computer skills u2013 Strong Excel and PowerPoint.
Experience with Power BI u2013 Tableau (asset).

  • Create and maintaining required documentation for manufacturing processes, process-failure-mode-effects-analysis, value-stream-maps, capacity and utilization studies, time and motion studies, standard work, cycle time analysis, and line balancing.
  • Research and test design ideas to determine feasibility, utilizing lean manufacturing, kaizen, Six Sigma, poka-yoke, and root-cause analysis to formulate and support innovation, corrective actions, and improvements.

SciCan is a market leader in the manufacture and distribution of dental and medical equipment. SciCan's manufactured sterilization and disinfection equipment is sold in over 80 countries, worldwide. SciCan is located in Toronto near the intersection of Highways 401 and 404 (Don Mills and York Mills). It is accessible by public transportation.


We currently have an opening for a Manufacturing Engineer as part of our Continuous Improvement Department. This position is responsible to support production activities to ensure consistent high-quality output, productivity improvements and process robustness. This position will also work as a liaison between production and other SciCan departments from product development to the transfer of the product to manufacturing.


Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing processes, utilizing knowledge of product design, materials and parts, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, and quality control standards
  • Identify and troubleshoot process, material, or equipment problems to minimize down time.
  • Where possible, apply 6 sigma techniques in the resolution of process, quality, and system deficiencies.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing issues and drive to closure with related parties. Recommend solutions to design team, if required
  • Assist production personal in failure analysis and troubleshooting of non-conforming manufactured product to determine the root cause
  • Design and develop tools, jigs, and fixtures to aid in assembly. Create CAD models and drawings for these tools
  • Maintain production tools and fixtures
  • Initiate and lead projects to improve production efficiency, ergonomics and safety of production personals
  • Prepare reports, charts, and other documentation required for engineering records and projects
  • Working with Design team at the early stages of new product development ensuring DFM and DFA principals are applied to product design.
  • Develops testing and inspection criteria at various stages of assembly based on the statistical data of parts’ reliability and recommendation from the design team
  • Assist with training of manufacturing employees on new products, tooling, equipment, and process revisions
  • Identify critical control points and preventive measures
  • Create and maintain FMEA documents.
  • Using lean concepts and tools, participate in continuous improvement projects to improve production plant and manufacturing processes
  • Make recommendations and initiate Plant Wide Quality/Process System Improvements including alternative materials, equipment, gauging, systems, error proofing, and methods.
  • Update and document current plant layout. Modify layout as required to support new assembly requirements or new product launch.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, manufacturing or industrial engineering.
  • 5 plus years of related experience in a manufacturing environment preferably with medical products.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing and quality improvement methods, including Lean Manufacturing concepts
  • Must be a self-starter, with the ability to work both alone/with minimal supervision and in team environment
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a demonstrated ability to conduct root cause analysis and FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis)
  • Excellent computer and data analysis skills. Candidate must be proficient in Microsoft Office, CAD (Creo preferably), and CMMS systems.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Certification in Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt, Black Belt) or equivalent will be an asset.
  • Familiarity with ISO13485 and general product safety requirements such as CSA, UL, TUV will be an asset

+ Prepare detailed shop routings and identify required resources, tooling, and operating procedures.
+ Resolve non-conforming conditions by assessing drawings, specifications, and quality standards; produce supplementary documentation and liaise with relevant personnel.

**Position Overview:**
The Engineering II (Manufacturing) is a member of the Engineering department that prepares work instructions, operation detail sheets, creates purchase orders, designs jigs and fixtures to support production and assist in continual improvement initiatives to streamline manufacturing. This position is also responsible for managing small to medium size contracts.
**Location:**
This position is onsite in Oakville, Ontario.
**Your Day to Day:**
+ Develop detailed work instructions including CAD drawings, Inspection Test Procedures (ITPs), and Manufacturing Control Sheets (MCS) to lead the process to manufacture and assemble these complex precision-machined components.
+ Interface with Machinists, Programmers, and Quality Control Engineers to ensure that all manufacturing processes are proven prior to the start of production.
+ Responsible to schedule and lead all Pre-Production Part Qualification samples, managing and leading the team through the launch process (drawings / tooling / MCS, fixtures, inspection plans etc.).
+ Work with Machinists / Operators to drive run-time reduction, through Time Studies, Lean 5s events, highlighting waste (inefficiency, rework, improper tool setup) and develop actions plans to execute the change.
+ Lead and manage all Process / Engineering Change requests.
+ Design component jigs, fixtures and test rigs.
+ Responsible to disposition non-conformances and create rework instructions to release non - conforming parts back into production.
+ Assist with mentoring junior team members (ex. Co-op / Interns).
+ Assist with capital expenditure review for purchasing new equipment.
+ This role involves working on assigned shifts that may change periodically. Our shifts operate during the day, in the afternoon, and on weekends.
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Nuclear Engineering.
+ 5-10 years of experience in a manufacturing engineering or;
+ 2-5 years of experience in an engineering role in the nuclear industry or similar high spec industry. (Ex. Aerospace).
+ P.Eng License considered an asset, or working towards license in Ontario.
+ Knowledge of ASME Code, ISO 9001, CSA N285.0 and N299 quality programs is an asset.
+ Experience in supporting junior team members with training or work completion.
+ Demonstrated ability to achieve department KPI goals and objectives.
+ Expert in the use of 3D solid modeling software; Solidworks is preferred.
+ Experience with manufacturing precision-machined components and related processes including heat treatment, plating, assembly and testing activities.

Maintenance Electrician - food Mfg Shift: 8 to 12 hours rotational

Maintenance Electrician

  • 3 - 5 years Manufacturing Maintenance Electrical experience preferred
  • Must have PLC experience.
  • Must know how to use VOM Meter, Megger, AMP Meter and Chart Recorder
  • Sound working knowledge of Electrical Safe Work Practices; AC and DC Electrical Theory; reading/creating electrical prints and control schematics; motor control; personal computer hardware and software; computer networks; pneumatic and hydraulic valves; photo eyes; proximity sensors; limit switches; breakers & fuses.
  • Must have basic electric motor repair, electrical construction, trouble shooting skills.
  • Must have some electrical schematic and blueprint reading skills.
  • Must know the operation of a motor starter and how to rebuild
  • Must have some understanding of AC drive motor controllers.

Essential Functions

  • Support internal projects.
  • Repairs, installs, replaces and tests electrical circuits, equipment, PLC components, and appliances by using hand tools and testing instruments
  • Inspects and tests electrical equipment, lighting, signal, communication, and power circuits
  • Isolates defects in wiring, switches, motors and other electrical equipment using instruments such as ammeters, ohmmeters, and voltmeters
  • Replaces faulty switches, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems as needed, and has the ability to dismantle electrical machinery and replace defective electrical or mechanical parts such as gears, brushes and armatures
  • Has the ability to test and complete circuits according to blueprint and diagram specifications
  • Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures and inspects completed work for conformance with requirements of existing building and safety codes
  • Must be able to repair or replace all electrical devices including, but not limited to: breaker panels, motor starters, heaters, fuses, lights, AC drives, motors, electrical switches, etc. – all in accordance with state and federal codes, including company policies and procedures
  • Must be able to perform construction work such as running conduits, pulling wire, installing switches, breaker panels, etc. – as needed to supply power to plant electrical apparatus
  • Must be able to maintain a log (work sheet) of equipment repairs and problems. A list of electrical maintenance that needs to be done must also be kept

Work Environment

The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. This job is performed in a shop environment: hazardous materials; greasy, slippery factory floors.
