As a new Director of Nursing Care joining our Village Team, you will:
- Possess a current registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Hold current Heart Save Level of CPR.
- Have three (3) years of experience leading and directing department(s) in a healthcare setting.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills.

- Display a caring and respectful attitude toward our residents, families, and team members.
- Understand the physical, mental, and emotional demands of the Assistant Director of Nursing Care role.

- RNAO/RPNAO membership.
- MDS credentialed (Optional dependant on Village size).
- An awareness and understanding of infection control practices, workplace hazardous materials and chemicals (WHMIS), as well as, all relevant health and safety procedures.
- Skill in operating common hand and power tools.

Position Title: CHILD & YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH COUNCELLOR

Reports to: Manager, Social Services
Job Overview
Reporting to the Manager, Social Services, the Child & Youth Mental Health provides direct clinical counselling and support services to Haisla children and youth (ages 0-18) experiencing mental health challenges. The Counsellor works collaboratively with families and other service providers to promote emotional, psychological, and social well-being among children and youth. Services include individual counselling, group work, family support, and prevention and wellness programming. The Counsellor uses a culturally safe, trauma-informed, and client-centred approach grounded in Indigenous ways of knowing and healing.
The Counsellor also serves as a key resource to build community awareness and reduce stigma related to mental health, through education and outreach in the Haisla community.

The Haisla Nation is the band government of the Haisla people. Our mission is to build a powerful, prosperous and proud community, healthy in mind, body and spirit. We believe in building a strong and thriving community, with healthy and happy members and a sustained and prosperous environment. We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide clinical counselling services to children and youth ages 0-19 with mild to moderate mental health concerns, using culturally appropriate and evidence-based practices.
- Conduct intake assessments to identify presenting issues, strengths, and client/family needs.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in collaboration with the client, their family, and other service providers.
- Provide supportive counselling to families/caregivers to strengthen their capacity to support their child/youth’s mental health and well-being.
- Facilitate therapeutic groups and workshops to promote coping skills, resilience, and social connections among children and youth.
- Participate in case coordination with internal Haisla Nation departments and external agencies (e.g. MCFD Child & Youth Mental Health, School District, Primary Care Providers, FNHA).
- Respond to crisis situations, providing immediate support and linking to emergency services as needed.
- Support a land-based healing approach by integrating Haisla culture and traditions into counselling and wellness activities.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical records, case notes, assessments, treatment plans, and statistical reports, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with ethical and legal standards.
- Support community education and outreach activities to increase mental health literacy and reduce stigma.
- Engage in professional development to maintain knowledge of best practices in child and youth mental health.
Skills & Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology, Social Work, or a related clinical field.
- 5+ years of experience providing mental health counselling services, with a focus on children and youth.
- Clinical registration (or eligible for registration) with a recognized provincial regulatory body (e.g. RCC, RSW, CCC).
- Demonstrated knowledge of child/youth mental health issues, trauma-informed care, and Indigenous approaches to healing.
- Strong clinical assessment, counselling, and crisis intervention skills.
- Ability to work respectfully and effectively with Indigenous children, youth, and families.
- Experience integrating traditional and land-based healing practices into clinical work is an asset.
- Knowledge of community resources and services related to mental health, addictions, and family support.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Strong documentation and organizational abilities.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Valid BC driver’s license with access to a reliable vehicle.
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal records check with vulnerable sector screening.

Reporting Relationship
The Child & Youth Mental Health & Addictions Counsellor will work under the supervision of the Mental Health Clinic Manager.
Position Summary
The focus of the Child & Youth Mental Health & Addictions Counsellor will be to provide counselling to children and youth to support mental wellness by assisting with emotional regulation and resulting behavioural management. The Child & Youth Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor will provide services through a trauma-informed lens with a focus on addressing intergenerational trauma inclusive of grief & loss. The position will be responsible for providing services that include Traditional ways of Healing.
Essential Functions
- Assess and understand the child or youths mental health needs through a developmental and trauma informed lens and formulate methods of intervention in collaboration with the team.
- Working knowledge of mental health and addictions
- Work within MFN elementary and secondary school environments when required
- Develop and implement the delivery of workplan initiatives
- Provide client needs assessments and develop treatment plans
- Provide direct counselling to children and youth
- Provide Trauma Informed Care services
- Assist team with prevention, intervention, and promotion workshops/activities/awareness within the community, inclusive of both traditional and western approaches
- Provide appropriate referrals to other services
- Provide aftercare services and supports for children and youth
- Maintain a case management system utilizing the Electronic Medical Record system
- Participate in regular intake meetings and case management reviews
- Ensure professional competence by seeking consultation and effective use of clinical supervision
- Research evidenced based practices and weave these strategies with Anishinaabe teachings when delivering services and/or programming to the youth
- Identify community-driven, cultural-based interventions to increase awareness of Anishinabek cultural beliefs and practices to promote and sustain healthy communities
- Monitor and evaluate results of workshops for enhancements/improvements and include solutions and recommendations in report submissions
- Keep abreast of new developments in the mental health and addictions field
- Ensures compliance of MFN Personnel, Finance and Administrative policies and procedures
- Attends internal monthly staff meetings and prepares quarterly staff reports
- Participates in professional development opportunities for skills improvement and program enhancement as advised by the Mental Health Clinic Manager
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum
College Diploma in Social Services or related field of study (i.e., Addictions & Mental Health Diploma, Social Services Worker Diploma, Child & Youth Care)
3 - 5 years work-related experience in the field of child & youth mental health
Knowledge and skills in mental health, alcohol and/or drugs addictions awareness and prevention
Excellent Public Speaking and Facilitation Skills
Preferred
University Degree in Social Services field of study (Social Work, Psychology) and 2-years relevant work experience
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
Mental Health First Aid
Other
Have working knowledge of Harm Reduction Philosophy
Excellent time management and organizational skills with ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Be a role model both during and after regular work hours
Working knowledge of Outlook, Microsoft Office and general office procedures
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal)
Must obtain and keep current First Aid and CPR Certifications
