Job Description

As a family physician practicing in Canada, you will play a critical role in delivering comprehensive, patient-centered healthcare. Your duties include but are not limited to the following:

Primary Care and Patient Management
  • Diagnosing and Treating Illnesses: Assess, diagnose, and manage a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions in patients of all ages.
  • Preventative Care: Conduct routine check-ups, screenings, and immunizations to prevent illnesses and promote overall health.
  • Health Education: Provide advice on diet, exercise, lifestyle, and mental health to encourage healthier living and prevent diseases.
  • Patient Monitoring: Follow up on patient progress and adapt treatment plans as necessary.
Medical Procedures
  • Basic Procedures: Perform minor surgical procedures, wound care, and other office-based treatments.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Emergency Care: Provide immediate care for urgent medical issues and stabilize patients before referring to specialists or emergency departments if required.
Coordination and Collaboration
  • Referral to Specialists: Coordinate with medical specialists and other healthcare professionals when advanced or specialized care is necessary.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work with nurses, pharmacists, physiotherapists, social workers, and other members of the healthcare team to provide comprehensive care.
Patient Advocacy
  • Chronic Disease Management: Help patients manage conditions like diabetes, hypertension, asthma, or mental health disorders over time.
  • Health System Navigation: Assist patients in navigating the healthcare system and accessing resources for medications, treatments, or social services.
Community Health
  • Public Health Initiatives: Participate in community health programs and initiatives aimed at addressing public health concerns, such as vaccination campaigns or health awareness drives.
Administrative Responsibilities

THE OPPORTUNITY
GBGH is seeking locum General Internal Medicine/Intensivists to staff the General Medicine service, GIM Stress Test Clinic, and our Level 3 Basic Intensive Care Unit. Responsibilities include:

ICU COVERAGE

  • Seven (7) day shifts of ICU Most Responsible Physician duty in 8 bed unit
  • Weekend shifts may also be available
  • Must be competent in airway management including non-invasive ventilation, intubation and invasive ventilation, and invasive monitoring including central line and arterial line insertion

ON-CALL

  • The GBGH Internists will arrange their schedule to ensure coverage 24 x 7 x 365 for response to Emergency Department consultations, Inpatient consultations and ICU Most Responsible Physician Duty
  • Read ECG, PFTs when on call

IN-PATIENT

  • Consultations for GBGH credentialed staff and Emergency Department Follow-up in collaboration with Family Physicians and Hospitalists

OUT-PATIENT

  • Provision of out-patient consultations in Medicine Consult Clinic Outpatient procedures such as paracentesis and thoracentesis Cardiac stress testing

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:

  • College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) unrestricted license that allows the physician to fulfil the requirements of this position
  • Fellowship in Internal Medicine recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
  • Previous General Internal Medicine and Critical Care experience in a community hospital setting preferred
  • Demonstrate commitment to continued professional and personal growth and development through Continuing Education Programs and Self-Directed Learning opportunities

ADMINISTRATIVE & QUALITY

  • Participation in ongoing quality improvement and safety activities
  • Participation in hospital committees pertaining to specialty based on interests
