Manager, Alternative & Renewable Energy (QEC-25-008)

Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Manager, Alternative & Renewable Energy (ARE) is responsible for the research, planning, and managing ARE initiatives and programs. The position supports the execution of ARE projects by providing engineering support in areas such as planning, design, technical analysis, and conducting research. The position also provides technical advice, support, and recommendations to stakeholders as required through designated renewable/alternative energy resources.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee ARE staff and coordinate with other jurisdictions / utilities for developing ARE plan and program for the Corporation to meet QEC/GN mandate for reducing dependency on fossil fuel.
- Manage NMP (Net Metering Program), CIPP (Commercial and Institutional Power Producer), and IPP (Independent Power Producer) program.
- Provide recommendations for higher management regarding ARE initiatives.
- Respond to requests for information from the media re: renewable energy initiatives, etc.
- Keep track of all projects and resources, as well as reporting internally and externally.
- Closely work with Finance and Operations to ensure program effectiveness and to improve efficiency and liaison with Federal and Territorial Government agencies.
- Oversee design and development of new and existing ARE initiatives including stamping designs.
- Prepare Requests for Tender (RFT) / Request for Proposal (RFP) for ARE projects and ensures effective projects execution.
- Any other ad hoc duties as required.
Required Qualifications Include:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical / mechanical engineering.
- Experience in ARE project management in Utility sector.
- Registered Professional Engineer (P. Eng), with immediate eligibility for registration with NAPEG.
- Seven years of ARE project management experience in a utility.
- Two years of experience in the supervision and development of staff.
Assets:
- Project Management Professional (PMP) designation is an asset.
- Experience in full scope project management, from inception to commissioning an asset.
- Knowledge of power system analysis software such as ETAP, HOMER, RETScreen are assets.
- Experience in a utility environment is an asset.
A combination of education and equivalent experience may be considered.
We offer a competitive starting salary range of $149,128.02 to $79,392.80 and a northern living allowance of 16,008.00 per annum. Position Summary
Reporting to the Power Systems Studies Manager, the Power Systems Studies Engineer will play a key role in delivering power system studies including short circuit, coordination, arc flash studies, and ground grid analysis/design.

Key Responsibilities
Conduct power systems analysis using ETAP
Perform short circuit, coordination, arc flash, and load flow studies, including the preparation of technical reports
Design and analyze ground grids, including step/touch potential and ground potential rise (GPR) calculations
Provide mentorship and training for junior staff
Offer technical support for engineering projects
Prepare cost estimates and technical proposals
Ideal Candidate Experience
Familiarity with medium voltage protection systems and relays (e.g., SEL, GE, ABB)
Understanding of substation control systems
Experience conducting power system studies (short circuit, load flow, arc flash, coordination) using ETAP or similar software
Knowledge of ground grid analysis using CDEGS or comparable software

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Power System Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and overhauling electrical systems and equipment including engines, pumps, compressors, radiators, heat exchangers, lube oil systems, fuel oil systems, cooling systems, and other related subsystems.

- Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical generation systems, subsystems, and equipment to ensure maximum productivity and quality.
- Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs emergency electrical systems, subsystems, and equipment and replaces as required.
- Travels to remote communities to perform regular inspections, conduct preventative maintenance, install equipment, and perform general repairs to electrical generation systems.
- Works in collaboration with the Engineering department to review design and equipment specifications to ensure projects meet all regulatory and QEC compliance standards.
- Works in collaboration with related trades and staff to ensure on-time and on-budget completion of capital and O&M projects.
- Maintains maintenance documentation and coordinates with Engineering, operators, maintenance staff, when amending documentation.
- Provides on-site solutions or modifications to bring systems back online as quickly as possible during outage situations while mitigating risk to equipment.
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment at all times and acts in a pro-active manner to make timely recommendations for continuous improvement of operations and equipment.
- Coordinates with Stores to ensure appropriate electrical inventory and materials are ordered in advance of the annual sealift season.
- Ensures work is conducted in accordance with all corporate policies and procedures; territorial, provincial, and national codes; and in compliance with all health, safety and environmental regulations.

Your Role as Intermediate Electrical Engineer
In your role as an Intermediate Electrical Engineer, reporting to the Manager of Power Systems Engineering Services, you are responsible for performing engineering design and studies for various electrical distribution and substation projects (from 600V up to 230kV voltage levels). This includes preparing electrical protection and control design deliverables, and/or physical layouts for medium and high voltage substations. - Prepares scope of work, estimates, schedules, budgets, specifications and reports.
- Prepare new and modify existing relay drawings including relay panel arrangements, single lines, three lines, AC and DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
- Prepare new and modify existing reports/studies such as Protection and Coordination, Arc Flash, Load Flow and Grounding.
- Leads site visits for data collection, and assessments and to provide recommendations for remedial action.
- Leads and provides oversight for QAQC (quality assurance quality control) checks as
required.

- Project Coordination and Management
- Provide leadership and strategic direction to project teams.
- Leads large projects and project teams, ensuring project delivery meets scopes, schedules, budget, and quality requirements.
- Provides oversight in planning and execution of complex projects.
- Manages project timelines, budgets, and resource allocations.
- Coordinates and manages the project team, including clients, contractors, and internal teams.
- Supervision over other engineers or technicians when required on a non-regular basis.

Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of related low/medium/high voltage power distribution experience is required
- A degree in electrical engineering is required
- Registered with PEO, and holds a Professional Engineering License (P.Eng), or equivalent in Canada.
- Substation design experience considered an asset
- Familiarity with power systems including power systems studies (load flow and protective device coordination using Easypower, SKM and ETAP), project scopes, project schedules and deliverables
- Knowledge of engineering standards, codes and guidelines
- Strong industrial experience, with experience in surface and underground mining
- Knowledge of mining-related processes is a definite asset
- Able to work independently and in a team environment to meet tight deadlines
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suites applications.

Working Conditions
- Work is primarily performed in a regular office environment.
- Travel to client sites is required on occasion to attend meetings and to conduct field visits for quality checks for built as designed.
