Your Key Responsibilities

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Education and Experience

The Sr. Power Systems Engineer provides applied electrical engineering and technical expertise for customers in the areas of power system design, power systems studies, power quality analysis, installation, startup, maintenance, and repair.
Responsibilities
- Perform electrical power system engineering assessments in the areas of equipment installation, failed equipment analysis, equipment protection schemes, and grounding for Low, Medium and High Voltage installations
- Perform studies including short-circuit calculations, protection and coordination analysis, arc-flash hazard analysis, harmonic system analysis, grounding (step/touch and GPR), and motor starting studies
- Power Quality analysis, including capacitor and harmonic filter selection
- Perform electrical design improvements primarily to support the upgrade of electrical distribution
- Prepare written reports of inspection findings, proposals, and recommended solutions or improvements
- Perform complete engineering documentation packages for new power system projects including: electrical equipment and installation specifications, Single Line Diagrams, Three-line diagrams, DC control schematics, AC control schematics, equipment layout drawings, cable schedules, cable tray drawings, etc.
- Able to mentor Power Systems Engineers as needed
- Provide practical technical expertise to internal/external clients through excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Meet customers on-site to review and identify their needs; provide engineering cost estimates and bid proposals.
- Utilize Engineering skills and applicable codes and standards to implement electrical systems that are safe, dependable, and practical
- Must be able to work safely and adhere to all electrical safety procedures such as LOTO

Required Experience and Qualifications:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (or related field such as Power Systems) with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. Experience in industrial projects is preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of professional experience in power systems engineering studies (short-circuit, coordination, load flow, arc flash, harmonics, etc.)
- Experience with power system analysis software such as ETAP or equivalent
- Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills are required
- Knowledge of various industry standards including ANSI, IEEE, CEC, NETA, NEC, OSHA and NFPA.
- Self-management of assigned projects and job cost accountability to perform work within budgeted cost estimates
- Must be able to work safely and adhere to all electrical safety procedures
- Not required, but considered strong assets: protection relay testing and commissioning, control systems design, PLC/HMI programming, experience with AutoCAD Electrical

The Engineering Service Business Unit focuses on power system software development, power system and substation consulting studies and compliance testing services, as well as asset management solutions for electric utilities and other clients in power industry. We are the vendor of the cutting-edge power system analysis software package, DSATools™, which has been recognized globally as leading-edge technologies and software platforms for dynamic security assessment of large complex power systems for both off-line (system planning) and on-line applications (near-real-time operation). We provide a full spectrum of study services from fast electromagnetic transient switching studies, to typical power system planning and operation studies, post-mortem investigation of system disturbances and equipment failures, grounding, and to protection and insulation coordination studies.
As a member of the Substations Studies team your role will be to perform desktop analytical studies including modelling and simulation applied to transient analysis, impact studies, equipment failure investigations, insulation coordination, equipment specification, grounding, and arc-flash studies, setting-up and conducting electrical tests associated to stations equipment and grounding, and write-up of clear and concise study reports. Our clients include equipment suppliers, utilities, industrials, and engineering firms around the globe.
Major Responsibilities :
• Perform desk-top analytical studies
• Conduct arc flash, induction and grounding studies (independent level)
• Conducting electromagnetic transients, insulation coordination, short circuit and harmonic studies
• Carry out failure analysis investigations
• Maintain detailed documentation throughout all phases of analytical studies or testing
• Prepare detailed technical reports
• Develop innovative engineering techniques and apply theoretical and practical knowledge in modelling, analysis, and problem resolution
• Participate in and/or lead the planning, preparation and execution of tests and equipment condition assessment according to international standards and customer requirements in the laboratory and the field
• Work within our quality program and accreditation and, as required, work to expand our quality accreditation

Qualifications
• The successful applicant preferably will have a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering. Applicants who have bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with direct work experience will be considered.
• Registered or eligible for immediate registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (i.e., non-British Columbia registrations are acceptable as long as there is an ability to immediately transfer the accreditation).
• Minimum seven (7) years of modelling experience and/or related experience in PSCAD/EMTP-RV for insulation coordination studies and ETAP for Arc Flash studies. Experience in ANSYS, CDEGS, ASPEN and MATLAB is desirable and would be considered a define asset.
• Experience in substation equipment, substation planning and design, testing and commissioning of substation equipment including protective relaying, maintenance of substation equipment, analytical studies (load flow, short circuit, insulation coordination, arc flash, grounding, harmonics) would be considered a definite asset
• Experience identifying, analyzing, and resolving Electrical Engineering problems
• Technical knowledge in Electric Utility Engineering and/or heavy industrial experience
• General technical knowledge in generation, transmission, maintenance, apparatus, civil structures and/or control functions would be an asset
• Introductory knowledge of project management including estimating, cost control and project administration is considered an asset.

Power Systems Electrician (QEC-25-035)

Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Power System Electrician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and overhauling electrical systems and equipment including engines, pumps, compressors, radiators, heat exchangers, lube oil systems, fuel oil systems, cooling systems, and other related subsystems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs electrical generation systems, subsystems, and equipment to ensure maximum productivity and quality.
- Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs emergency electrical systems, subsystems, and equipment and replaces as required.
- Travels to remote communities to perform regular inspections, conduct preventative maintenance, install equipment, and perform general repairs to electrical generation systems.
- Works in collaboration with the Engineering department to review design and equipment specifications to ensure projects meet all regulatory and QEC compliance standards.
- Works in collaboration with related trades and staff to ensure on-time and on-budget completion of capital and O&M projects.
- Maintains maintenance documentation and coordinates with Engineering, operators, maintenance staff, when amending documentation.
- Provides on-site solutions or modifications to bring systems back online as quickly as possible during outage situations while mitigating risk to equipment.
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment at all times and acts in a pro-active manner to make timely recommendations for continuous improvement of operations and equipment.
- Coordinates with Stores to ensure appropriate electrical inventory and materials are ordered in advance of the annual sealift season.
- Ensures work is conducted in accordance with all corporate policies and procedures; territorial, provincial, and national codes; and in compliance with all health, safety and environmental regulations.

- Communicates with local and territorial government to advise on power interruptions resulting in direct impact to communities, as required.
Required Qualifications Include:
- Intra-provincial certification as a Power Systems Electrician, or equivalent
Assets:
- Red Seal certification is an asset.
- Experience in diesel power generation is an asset.
- Knowledge of Nunavut, the land, language, and culture.
- The ability to communicate in Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun and/or French.
We offer a competitive salary range of $113,838.40 to $32,059.20 and a northern living allowance of 18,517.00 per annum. We also offer a comprehensive benefits package, including a defined-benefit pension program. Accommodation is not guaranteed at this point. Will be allocated when available. This position is included in the Nunavut Employee's Union.
Preference will be given to Nunavut Inuit.

- Possess strong understanding of Electrical to accurately appraise existing systems components, evaluate general site conditions, and recommend the most applicable system or technical solutions.
- Participates in job site final walk thru and manages the completion of all close out documentation such as As-Built drawings and system operating instructions, transfers or excess materials, billings, collections and payments, and all project records.
- Attends scheduled Operations Team meetings to review business practices, financial updates, health and safety updates, and company updates.
- Administers and manages project team for all requirements under OHS Safety Program, including COR requirements for documentation and procedures, safety talks, and training.
- Manage project performance by creating and executing project work plans being actively engaged in on-site work, including installation, commissioning, and testing and providing monthly reports as required and tracking quality issues and team development.
- Manage subcontractor workflow regarding installation practices in order to comply with company guidelines and contractor management program.
- Establish and maintain strong partnership with clients responsible for the decision-making process. Actively listen, probe and identify concerns. Understand each customer's business and demonstrate technical expertise to develop credibility, loyalty, and trust
Qualifications:
- 2-5 years relevant experience within the electrical industry is an asset
