Job Description
The Sample Preparation technician is responsible for performing routine sorting, transferring, drying, crushing, pulverizing and screening of geological materials in accordance with client work order instructions and laboratory quality guidelines and procedures. The position is with the ARD (Acid Rock Drainage) group.
- Unpack, sort, transfer and dry samples.
- Execute and perform crushing, pulverizing and screening of geological materials as per SGS' Standard Operating Procedures.
- Conduct routine quality checks including particle size analysis, dust loss and report data immediately to the Supervisor or group leader if results are outside of acceptability parameters.
- Ensure that work order documentation is complete in every respect and QC results are entered into SLIMS as necessary.
- Maintain clean and organized workbench area ensuring spills are immediately cleaned; disposal is according to laboratory procedures including any special requirements for handling international soils.
- Ensure that equipment is maintained in good order making the Supervisor or group leader aware of any damaged or defective equipment or any equipment requiring adjustment i.e., pulverizing time or crushers gapping.
- Keep all records and notebooks in good order including work order and equipment maintenance logs
- May be asked to work in other areas of the Geochemistry laboratory sections when required.
Qualifications
- Education: High school Diploma.
- Experience: 0-1 years of relevant work experience required or equivalent experience through education.
- Availability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and afternoons when necessary.
- Must be able to read, understand and follow work instructions in a safe, accurate and timely manner.
- Incumbents must be proficient in using various types of computer software (Word, Excel. PowerPoint & Outlook).
- Good time management skills and a strong attention to detail.
- Candidates must be able to communicate effectively in English, in both verbal and written communication.
- Ability to work well with others & independently.
- Ability to work well under pressure.

Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute R&D projects, utilizing analytical chemistry, electrochemistry, spectroscopy, and thermal analysis techniques to evaluate materials and develop durability-enhancing products.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret test data, performing statistical analysis to identify trends and support R&D initiatives.
- Perform routine QA/QC tests on raw materials, cementitious mixes, and finished products to ensure compliance with internal and ASTM/CSA specifications.
- Prepare and mix cement, mortar, and concrete samples for laboratory testing.
- Conduct mechanical, durability, and analytical chemistry tests (e.g., spectroscopy, chromatography, chemical composition analysis) to evaluate material performance.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, summarizing experimental methods, data analysis, and conclusions for internal teams and stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate lab records and documentation of all QA/QC results and experimental data.
- Ensure lab safety, cleanliness, and equipment maintenance.
Education & Qualifications
- Education: BSc or MSc (preferred) in Analytical Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Materials Science, Forestry, or a closely related field.
- Strong interest in cementitious materials, concrete testing, and innovative product development.
- Familiarity with laboratory safety procedures and good documentation practices.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working in a team environment.
- Ability to lift and handle materials up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Assets
- Concrete Field-Testing Technician certification (CSA or ACI) is a plus.
- Prior lab experience with cement, concrete, or construction materials.
- Knowledge of ASTM or CSA standards for QA/QC testing of cementitious materials.
Compensation & Benefits
Hourly Wage Range: $25.25 to $1.25 per hour.
The salary offered to the successful candidate will be based on their experience, knowledge and skills they bring to Xypex. While the expected hourly rate range is 25.25 to 31.25 per hour, we may consider a different amount depending on the experience, knowledge, and skills of the successful candidate.

Basic Purpose
Responsible for performing sample preparations and to provide general lab support in the analysis of samples, in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures and health and safety policies.
