The Opportunity
The Second Engineer is a key technical position responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and operation of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems on the floatel alongside in Canada. Working closely with the Chief Engineer, the Second Engineer ensures the efficient and safe functioning of the floatel's machinery and equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
Equipment Maintenance and Repair:
- Carry out regular maintenance, inspection, and repair of all machinery and equipment on the floatel.
- Ensure compliance with maintenance schedules and procedures to minimize downtime and maximize reliability.
- Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and implement necessary repairs promptly.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work performed and spare parts used.
Machinery Operation:
- Operate and monitor the performance of the floatel's machinery and systems, including propulsion, power generation, HVAC, plumbing, and other auxiliary systems.
- Ensure proper functioning and efficiency of all machinery and equipment.
- Monitor fuel consumption and implement measures to optimize fuel efficiency.
- Respond to alarms and emergencies, taking appropriate actions to prevent equipment failure or damage.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow and enforce all safety protocols and regulations, ensuring a safe working environment.
- Conduct regular inspections to identify and address safety hazards or equipment deficiencies.
- Implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize the risk of equipment failures.
- Keep abreast of regulatory changes and industry best practices related to equipment and machinery.
Team Collaboration:
- Work closely with the Chief Engineer and other engineering staff to coordinate maintenance activities and ensure smooth operations.
- Assist in managing and supervising the engineering team, providing guidance and support as needed.
- Collaborate with other departments to address equipment-related issues and ensure guest satisfaction.
Spare Parts and Inventory Management:
- Maintain an inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies required for maintenance and repair activities.
- Monitor stock levels, place orders, and ensure timely delivery of required items.
- Optimize inventory management practices to minimize costs while ensuring the availability of critical items.
Qualifications
- STCW Reg. III/2, second engineer officer on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3,000 kW propulsion power or more
- Must have sailed as 2nd Engineer on ships of 3000 gross tonnage or more
- STCW Reg. VI/2 competence in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats
- SOLAS Ch III, Evacuation Slide training
- STCW Reg. VI/3 advanced firefighting
- STCW Reg. VI/4, competence in medical first aid
- STCW Reg. VI/6 security-related training and instruction for all seafarers
- STCW Crisis management and human behavior training
- STCW Crowd management training
- STCW Special training for Ro/Ro passenger ships
- 3-5 years of sea service experience on Ro-Ro or passenger ship as 2nd Engineer/ 3rd
- Excellent comprehension and command of the English language (written & verbal)

You will work closely with the Project Management office and the Production Irradiator Controls team to deliver projects on-time and on budget.

Lead or participate in all aspects of the design and manufacture of irradiator components and assemblies. Simple thermal analysis and calculations
The following aspects would be considered an asset:
Prior experience in nuclear industry.
Prior experience in the design, analysis and manufacture of conveyor systems.
Competency in finite element analysis using SolidWorks (or other) software tools;
Familiarity with welding and more specifically weld design, specification and qualification;
Some exposure to radiation shielding design and analysis;

Excellent verbal communication skills. You must be able to clearly explain complex technical, regulatory and compliance aspects to non-technical audiences.
Proven ability to exercise sound technical judgments on complex decisions falling outside standard practices and procedures.
Experience providing technical recommendations with limited review from senior staff, providing technical guidance to other engineers and to technicians, and providing review and feedback on technical items.
Excellent technical writing skills.
Effective team player
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Additional Requirements
Occasional overtime to meet project requirements
Travel requirements (60-90 days international travel requiring valid Canadian passport)
Training Required:
Must complete all required training and certification as a Nuclear Energy Worker
