The Opportunity


The Second Engineer is a key technical position responsible for overseeing the maintenance, repair, and operation of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems on the floatel alongside in Canada. Working closely with the Chief Engineer, the Second Engineer ensures the efficient and safe functioning of the floatel's machinery and equipment.


Key Responsibilities


Responsibilities and essential job functions include, but are not limited to, the following:


Equipment Maintenance and Repair:

  • Carry out regular maintenance, inspection, and repair of all machinery and equipment on the floatel.
  • Ensure compliance with maintenance schedules and procedures to minimize downtime and maximize reliability.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose equipment malfunctions and implement necessary repairs promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work performed and spare parts used.

Machinery Operation:

  • Operate and monitor the performance of the floatel's machinery and systems, including propulsion, power generation, HVAC, plumbing, and other auxiliary systems.
  • Ensure proper functioning and efficiency of all machinery and equipment.
  • Monitor fuel consumption and implement measures to optimize fuel efficiency.
  • Respond to alarms and emergencies, taking appropriate actions to prevent equipment failure or damage.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow and enforce all safety protocols and regulations, ensuring a safe working environment.
  • Conduct regular inspections to identify and address safety hazards or equipment deficiencies.
  • Implement preventive maintenance programs to minimize the risk of equipment failures.
  • Keep abreast of regulatory changes and industry best practices related to equipment and machinery.

Team Collaboration:

  • Work closely with the Chief Engineer and other engineering staff to coordinate maintenance activities and ensure smooth operations.
  • Assist in managing and supervising the engineering team, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments to address equipment-related issues and ensure guest satisfaction.

Spare Parts and Inventory Management:

  • Maintain an inventory of spare parts, tools, and supplies required for maintenance and repair activities.
  • Monitor stock levels, place orders, and ensure timely delivery of required items.
  • Optimize inventory management practices to minimize costs while ensuring the availability of critical items.

Qualifications

  • STCW Reg. III/2, second engineer officer on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 3,000 kW propulsion power or more
  • Must have sailed as 2nd Engineer on ships of 3000 gross tonnage or more
  • STCW Reg. VI/2 competence in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats
  • SOLAS Ch III, Evacuation Slide training
  • STCW Reg. VI/3 advanced firefighting
  • STCW Reg. VI/4, competence in medical first aid
  • STCW Reg. VI/6 security-related training and instruction for all seafarers
  • STCW Crisis management and human behavior training
  • STCW Crowd management training
  • STCW Special training for Ro/Ro passenger ships
  • 3-5 years of sea service experience on Ro-Ro or passenger ship as 2nd Engineer/ 3rd
  • Excellent comprehension and command of the English language (written & verbal)
  • Microsoft Office knowledge

Your Responsibilities:

  • Design process piping and fluid systems for electrochemical technologies
  • Specify and source mechanical and fluidic components for system integration
  • Design mechanical compression hardware and seals for electrochemical stacks
  • Design integrated fluid and valve manifolds to optimize flow control and minimize system complexity
  • Design protective enclosures to maintain environmental protection and ventilation of process areas, including specifying ventilation flow requirements
  • Support system controls development through pressure drop, flow rate, and thermal calculations
  • Lead and contribute to DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) for components and systems
  • Ensure designs meet necessary codes and standards
  • Conduct HazOp (Hazard and Operability) studies to ensure safe and reliable system operation
  • Generate design documentation including component and assembly drawings, P&IDs, to enable successful design review and fabrication
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, and R&D to support product development and continuous improvement
  • Contribute to the development, documentation, and protection of intellectual property (IP)
  • Partner with the leadership team to define project objectives, deliverables, budgets, and timelines

Your Qualifications:

  • Minimum undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering
    or related field
  • Minimum of 5
    years proven experience in designing chemical or electrochemical process equipment and systems
  • Professional engineering designation is an asset, but not explicitly required.
  • Proven experience translating prototype designs into commercially viable products
  • Familiarity with fuel cell and electrolyzer technologies including regulatory standards and compliance requirements
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, with a talent for simplifying complex challenges into actionable solutions
  • Project management experience is an asset, especially in coordinating cross-functional teams, managing timelines, and achieving technical milestones
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada and able to work on-site at Ayrton Energys facility in Calgary

The Mechanical Engineer will interact with the customers and suppliers and will work closely with the Production, Procurement, Service and Installation teams while reporting to the Operations Manager - Projects.


WHAT YOU WILL DO


  • Prepare concept, design and production drawings with supporting calculations and material data ensuring that designs meet specification requirements and manufacturing capabilities for new fabrications and existing equipment mechanical upgrades
  • Produce assembly and detail/shop drawings for production
  • Review and seal drawings
  • Interfacing with customers, vendors and managers to determine project scope, requirements, deliverables, budget, costing and schedules, etc.
  • Develop the technical documents required to carry out projects
  • Assist in preparing cost estimates and sourcing products
  • Produce BOM's and material requisitions
  • Perform site visits to validate scope requirements and determine existing mechanical builds on equipment
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation (OHSA), promote safe working practices including safe equipment operation, hazard reporting, and awareness of rights
  • Perform other duties as assigned


WHAT YOU NEED


  • Post-Secondary Degree in Mechanical or Structural (Civil) Engineering or relevant experience
  • 3 to 5 years of experience
  • Heavy Industrial Equipment Experience or O/H Crane experience is an asset
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in Ontario
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD and Solidworks computer-assisted design (CAD) software
  • Experience in designing machine-welded assemblies, a major asset
  • Experience in structural design, an asset
  • Knowledge of CSA S16 and CMAA specifications, an asset
  • Proficiency with office software (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Ability to work in cross-functional teams
  • Ability to manage priorities and work on various projects concurrently
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in resolving customer service issues
