Responsible for the investigation, evaluation, disposition and settlement of claims. In this position, you will be handling any of the following types of losses - Third Party property damages, Tenders, Third party liability claims.
How you'll make an impact
Responsibilities:
- Exercises proper judgment and decision making to analyze the claims exposure, to determine the proper course of action and to appropriately settle the claim.
- Interacts extensively with various parties involved in the claim process.
- Negotiate with solicitors and directly with parties to resolve claims within authority granted.
- Ability to think critically, solve problems, plan and organize activities, serve clients, negotiate, effectively communicate verbally and in writing and embrace new challenges.
- Handles claims consistent with our clients and corporate policies, procedures and “Best Practices” and in accordance to any statutory, regulatory and ethics requirements.
- Documents and communicates all claim activity timely and effectively and in a manner which supports the outcome of the claim file.
Requirements:
- Knowledge of accepted industry standards and practices. Analytical skills necessary to make decisions and resolve issues inherent in the handling of claims.
- Ability to successfully negotiate the settlement and disposition of claims including the ability to interpret related documentation. Negotiate with solicitors and directly with parties to resolve claims within authority granted.
- Strong coverage skills, ability to multi-task and adapt to a changing environment.

About the Role
Are you looking for your next opportunity in insurance industry? MutualONE is seeking an experienced Casualty Adjuster to join our claims team. Reporting to the Manager of Claims Services, you will be responsible for managing a portfolio of bodily injury and liability claims, ensuring fair and timely resolution while supporting our commitment to outstanding service for our members. This role is ideal for someone who thrives on investigation, negotiation, and working through complex files with care and professionalism.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate, evaluate, and manage third-party liability and bodily injury claims from first notice to conclusion
- Analyze policy coverage, gather statements, assess damages, and determine liability
- Work directly with insureds, claimants, legal counsel, and other stakeholders to resolve claims fairly and efficiently
- Manage litigation files, including retaining and coordinating with defense counsel and attending mediations or settlement conferences where appropriate
- Set accurate reserves, maintain detailed file documentation, and ensure compliance with internal and regulatory requirements
- Ensure claims are handled in accordance with industry best practices, legal frameworks, and company policies
- Identify potential fraud indicators and take appropriate investigative actions
- Participate in peer reviews and continuous improvement initiatives
Desired Competencies
- Strong understanding of Ontario insurance law, tort claims, and bodily injury adjusting principles
- Excellent investigative, analytical, and critical thinking skills
- Strong negotiation and communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism under pressure
- Empathetic and service-oriented approach when dealing with members and third parties
- Well-organized and able to manage a dynamic caseload with competing priorities
- Comfortable working independently while also contributing to a team environment
- Proficiency with claims management systems and Microsoft Office Suite
- Familiarity with court procedures, liability assessment, and alternative dispute resolution processes
Qualifications
- University Degree or post-secondary education related to insurance
- Completion of Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation or enrollment in the program
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in handling casualty, bodily injury, or liability claims
- Experience managing litigation files, including working with legal counsel and settlement processes
- Knowledge of the Ontario Insurance Act and tort law
- Experience in a mutual insurance environment is a strong asset
- Valid drivers license and access to reliable transportation
- Completion of a Drivers Abstract and Criminal Record Check will be required
This role will require travel. A vehicle, valid Drivers License and insurance are required.

Investigate and Direct handle selected losses.
Co-adjust Business Insurance Property losses with an anticipated exposure in excess of $500,000.
Manage selected losses assigned to independent adjusters.
Manage quota share claims (subscription policies).
Manage selected litigated files.
Complete self-reviews on files handled by Claim staff.
Participate on Annual Quality Management Review Team.
Coordinate/Participate in Property Training and Development Programs.
Major Case Unit CAT Management to include triaging severity losses, maintaining log and handling/co-adjusting certain claims.
Participate on Large Loss Conference Calls with our Business Insurance Partners.
Ensure that all Large Loss Reports are professionally completed when published. This includes, but is not limited to accurately reflecting the content of the report, gross and net exposures at the time of submission, etc.
Support business partners as needed.
This position requires the individual to access and inspect all areas of a structure which is physically demanding requiring the ability to carry, set up and climb a ladder weighing approximately 38 to 49 pounds with a safety weight rating of up to 300 pounds (safety weight rating is the amount of weight the ladder can safely carry and includes weight of the individual and up to16 pounds of standard equipment), walk on roofs, and enter tight spaces (such as attic staircases and entries, crawl spaces, etc.)
Perform other duties as assigned.

Proficient oral and written communication skills.
