As a Hardware Engineer, you will play a key role in a new developmental project focused on a naval/shipboard communications system for the Royal Canadian Navy’s fleet of patrol ships. You will be involved in the design, development, and integration of electronics and electrical systems. From concept to production, you will drive full-cycle product development efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze customer requirements and translate needs into robust hardware solutions.

Work Environment

The role offers a hybrid work schedule with 2 days in-office on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Role:
As an Electronics Designer at Kron Technologies, you'll play a critical role in the design of our current and future high-speed cameras, leading the design, layout, and bring-up of high-speed, high-performance printed circuit boards (PCBs) for our high-speed cameras. You’ll work closely with hardware, FPGA, and mechanical teams to ensure electrical performance and manufacturability.

What You'll Do:

  • Plan and evaluate PCB layer stackups for high-speed interfaces such as memory (DDR3–DDR5), PCIe, USB 3, HDMI, and LVDS interfaces, supporting data rates up to 12.5Gbps.
  • Collaborate with the hardware and FPGA teams to select components to achieve desired functionality, and define CPU/FPGA pinouts optimized for signal integrity and routing efficiency.
  • Define board size and layout to align with the mechanical design of the overall system.
  • Place components strategically to ensure layout efficiency, manufacturability, and performance.
  • Route PCB designs while meeting signal integrity and EMC requirements, maintaining impedance control, and achieving length matching where required.
  • Create and maintain schematic symbols and footprints for use across multiple projects.
  • Manage and update the company’s schematic and PCB libraries to support consistent, high-quality design standards.
  • Write firmware for microcontrollers that handle various low-level functions such as power management, thermal management, and lens control.
  • Perform board bring up, testing, and debugging.

What we’re looking for:

  • A diploma or degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering Technology, or a related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
  • Experience with high-speed digital design and PCB layout best practices.
  • Proficiency in PCB design tools such as Altium designer.
  • Familiarity with high-speed interfaces and signal integrity considerations.
  • Experience with embedded firmware, using C/C++.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to design.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with FPGAs and SOCs.
  • Knowledge of thermal and power considerations in dense designs.
  • Experience with DFM/DFT best practices.

  • Experience with development tools such as Orcad, Cadence Allegro, Altium, DxDesigner, and Xpedition.
  • Experience using optical test sets, signal analyzers, and GHz+ oscilloscopes for analysis of eye diagrams, phase noise, and overall signal quality.
  • Hands-on debugging experience involving scopes, VNAs, signal generators, electronic loads.
  • Familiarity with ESD, EMI, and RF design considerations.
  • Ability to use Verilog, RTL, or HLS an asset.
  • Ability to clearly communicate design requirements, status and issues with customers.

**Job Summary**
Reporting directly to the Director of Engineering, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Intermediate/Senior Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team. The ideal candidate will possess an in-depth knowledge of electrical engineering principles and have a proven track record in schematic capture, digital and analog circuit design, power supply development, and interconnect systems. The role also requires expertise in FPGA development, with a practical cross-over understanding of mechanical design for comprehensive system integration. The successful candidate will be instrumental in designing and developing advanced electrical systems for our cutting-edge products.
**As an Electrical Engineer, your main responsibilities will include (but not limited to):**
+ Design and implement electrical systems for various applications including schematic capture and full life-cycle product development.
+ Develop digital and analog circuitry, ensuring reliability and performance in line with specifications.
+ Design and optimize power supply systems suitable for the product requirements.
+ Collaborate with mechanical engineers to create interconnect systems that integrate electronics with mechanical components effectively.
+ FPGA development from concept through to production, including architecture definition, design, simulation, and verification.
+ Ensure that all electrical designs meet industry standards, customer specifications, and regulatory compliance.
+ Troubleshoot complex electrical issues and provide sustainable solutions.
+ Conduct peer reviews and provide constructive feedback on design and development work.
+ Work closely with other departments such as manufacturing and quality assurance to ensure smooth transition from design to production.
+ Stay current with emerging technologies and engineering practices, and incorporate new knowledge into design solutions.
+ Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior electrical engineers and technicians.
**What you require to be successful in the role:**
+ Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
+ Minimum 5 years of relevant experience for Intermediate Engineers, or 8+ years for Senior Engineers.
+ Demonstrable experience in schematic capture and PCB layout software.
+ Proficient in digital and analog circuit design, simulation, and analysis.
+ Experience in power supply design and optimization.
+ Hands-on experience with FPGA development, including VHDL or Verilog programming.
+ Familiarity with mechanical design considerations for electronic interconnect systems.
+ Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
+ Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
+ Proficient in the use of industry-standard electronics design and analysis tools.
+ Familiarity with regulatory compliance standards (*considered an asset)

We are currently seeking a qualified Senior Hardware Design Engineer to join our team. The Senior Hardware Design Engineer will be part of the hardware design and development team and work alongside various other engineering team members to provide support and assistance where required. You will be responsible for analyzing product requirements, preparing design materials, pricing, and preparing concept diagrams.


Job Type: Full-time, Hybrid


Responsibilities

  • Analyze the product hardware requirements and create a detailed block diagram.
  • Design and develop various complex safety critical aerospace electronics products
  • Create electronic circuits and concept diagrams of prototypes.
  • Prepare design materials (block diagrams, design documents, pricing) for customer reviews and proposals.
  • Work with Systems, Software, Hardware, and Component Engineering team members to analyze and solve issues.
  • Develop strong relationships with other engineering disciplines (Systems, Software, Hardware, and Mechanical designers) to maximize collaboration and synergy to meet project goals.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electronics, Electrical or Computer Engineering or equivalent.
  • Strong experience in electronic design involving microcontrollers, CPLD, switching power regulators, Analog Design.
  • Experience in preparing design documents for PDR, CDR milestones.
  • Experience with medium to complex schematic design in Orcad Capture or other tools.
  • Experience in full hardware design cycle from requirements to product delivery
