Your New Role:
Reporting to the Survey Manager, the Surveyor is responsible for the management of all field-site-specific surveying activities. The Surveyor is responsible for providing layout and elevations so that all construction activity can be properly built per design specifications. The ideal candidate will bring extensive knowledge of surveying software and technologies, demonstrating strong technical expertise and a commitment to precision in all surveying activities.
This full-time, permanent role is based in our Arnprior, ON office, with project sites primarily located between Ottawa and Chalk River, and the possibility of travel to additional locations.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
While the Surveyor is responsible for a multitude of duties, the main functions include:
- Ensures compliance with all Sullivan Policies and Procedures.
- Works closely with the Owner, Architects, and Engineers to convey designs and revisions to the Construction Team.
- Conducts day to day layout and grading tasks in accordance to project design specifications and ensures as-built data is collected with precision and tolerance.
- Directs or conducts surveys to establish legal boundaries for properties, based on legal deeds and titles.
- Plans and conducts ground surveys designed to establish baselines, elevations, and other geodetic measurements.
- Records the results of surveys, including the shape, contour, coordinates, elevations, and dimensions of existing conditions and as-builts via charts, plots, maps, handbooks, and other reports related to the survey for the Project Team.
- Communicates and illustrates survey findings with respect to the IFC designs for the Project Team, Clients, Engineers, Architects, and other personnel working on the project.
- Computes geodetic measurements and interprets survey data to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.
- Interprets IFC drawing sets and project specifications from PDF and CAD formats to support accurate site layout, construction planning, and execution.
- Coordinates with the Survey Manager and the Tools and Equipment Manager to obtain all required materials for the duration of the project.
- Oversees field logistics and inspections of pre-construction, construction and post construction work while serving as a liaison between Subcontractors, Consultants, and Site Superintendents.
- Manages and oversees the completion of required documentation, including the daily log, safety documentation, time sheets, labour quantities, packing slips, and purchases.
- Performs other duties that may be assigned as necessary.
Health, Safety, and Environmental:
- Adheres to all safety procedures and regulatory compliance.
- Communicates and enforces safety standards in conjunction with the Health, Safety, and Environmental Officer.
Quality:
- Adheres to all processes and procedures in the Sullivan Integrated Management System (S-IMS).
- Ensures the quality of produced efforts reflects the Sullivan quality standards core values.
What You Will Need to Succeed:
- 3+ years working as a land surveyor or in a closely related role (e.g., land survey technologist) in the construction industry.
- Successful completion of professional land surveyor examinations.
- A federal or provincial land surveyor's license.
- Must have strong technical understanding of surveying programs such as AutoCAD, MicroSurvey, Revit, Trimble Business Center, Trimble Siteworks, and Leica iCON software.
- Experience using Cloud-Based Construction Management Platforms such as Trimble WorksManager, Trimble WorksOS and/or Leica ConX.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge of the construction industry and construction specifications, methods and procedures.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Level II Secret Government clearance.

POSITION SUMMARY
Supporting the implementation and operation of construction layout processes on projects across the enterprise, as well as leading layout and field verification efforts using innovative field technologies. - Perform field layout and verification using innovative technologies at project jobsites

The Surveyor is a vital position for MacKay Contracting Ltd. to provide construction layout, quantity and as-built survey, quality control and other general survey duties.
Location & Hours:
This role will be based out of the Cranbrook headquarters office located at 1600A Theatre Rd., Cranbrook B.C. The position will entail travel to the jobsite, and when not in the field, is to be maintained from the office. About the Project:
The Eglinton Crosstown West Extension will bring the Eglinton Crosstown LRT another 9.2 kilometres farther west, creating a continuous rapid transit line from the east end of Toronto into Mississauga. The Stations, Rail, and Systems (SRS) package encompasses the design, construction, integration, and commissioning of key project components.
Position Overview
The Quantity Surveyor will support the commercial management of the ECWE SRS Project by providing expertise in cost control, contract administration, and change management. This role is responsible for measuring, valuing, and reporting on project costs, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, and supporting the project team in achieving budgetary and financial objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and update project cost estimates, budgets, and forecasts for stations, rail, and systems works.
- Conduct quantity take-offs, measurement, and valuation of works in accordance with project specifications and standards.
- Support the preparation, submission, and negotiation of progress claims, variations, and change orders.
- Review subcontractor and supplier quotations, claims, and invoices for accuracy and alignment with contract terms.
- Monitor project expenditures and assess cost impacts of design changes, schedule adjustments, and unforeseen conditions.
- Maintain detailed records of all commercial and contractual correspondence.
- Assist in preparing monthly cost and progress reports for internal and client review.
- Support risk management processes by identifying potential cost and contractual risks.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and procurement teams to ensure alignment between financial tracking and project delivery.
- Provide input into final account preparation and project closeout documentation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
- Professional membership or working toward accreditation (e.g., PQS, MRICS, CIQS) considered an asset.
- 5+ years of experience in quantity surveying or cost management, preferably on major infrastructure or transit projects.
- Strong knowledge of construction contracts (e.g., CCDC, P3, design-build).
- Proficiency with cost management software, estimating tools, and MS Office Suite (Excel in particular).
- Excellent analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multi-disciplinary project environment.
