  • Provide technical support and training to machine operators relating to Topcon 3DMC machine control system software.
  • Assist with managing and maintaining survey equipment, ensuring timely repairs, calibrations, and availability.
  • Maintain logs for survey asset usage, maintenance, and calibration records.
  • Prepare and submit technician reports and other relevant information based on the work completed, ensuring accurate documentation for each task.
  • Work closely with field crews, project managers, and estimating teams to ensure seamless communication and project flow.
  • Assist with resolving technical issues that arise during surveying or data processing.

You bring the following qualifications, technical and interpersonal skills:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A technical trade program in surveying or civil engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience in land surveying, civil construction, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in AutoDesk Civil 3D, Topcon GNSS/Robotic Total Station systems using Pocket 3D software and Topcon Machine control systems using 3DMC software.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and work in outdoor conditions.
  • Strong understanding of survey QA/QC processes and volume assessments.

Preferred Technical Skills:

  • Proficient in heavy construction and engineering surveying using terrestrial and satellite-based positioning systems.
  • Knowledge of civil construction, including utilities, earthworks, and road building.
  • Proficient in using AutoDesk Civil 3D, Topcon Pocket 3D and Microsoft Office for data preparation and processing.
  • Experience with the installation, calibration, and repair of machine control systems on heavy machinery.
  • Ability to perform inspections, testing, diagnostics, and repairs on electronic surveying equipment.

Location & Hours:

This role will be based out of the Cranbrook headquarters office located at 1600A Theatre Rd., Cranbrook B.C. The position will entail travel to the jobsite, and when not in the field, is to be maintained from the office. POSITION SUMMARY

Supporting the implementation and operation of construction layout processes on projects across the enterprise, as well as leading layout and field verification efforts using innovative field technologies. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Education

  • Minimum 5+ years relevant construction experience in construction layout and/or surveying
  • Preferred experience with robotic total stations and GPS instruments, lasers, tapes, range poles, rods, and levels
  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of the calculations employed in levelling, traversing, topographic surveys, mapping, construction surveys, laying out curves, and calculating volumes
  • Associate’s degree or Professional Course work in construction management, engineering, architecture or similar field a plus
  • ICI construction experience is preferred
  • Experience with construction management related applications such as Bluebeam, Procore, Microsoft Office, or other similar software systems
  • Experience with VDC technologies such as Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, and other similar software systems a plus
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) experience a plus
  • Ability to lift/carry equipment (10-30 pounds)
  • Stand and work on feet majority of the day in a construction environment

Your New Role:

Reporting to the Survey Manager, the Surveyor is responsible for the management of all field-site-specific surveying activities. The Surveyor is responsible for providing layout and elevations so that all construction activity can be properly built per design specifications. Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

While the Surveyor is responsible for a multitude of duties, the main functions include:

  • Ensures compliance with all Sullivan Policies and Procedures.
  • Works closely with the Owner, Architects, and Engineers to convey designs and revisions to the Construction Team.
  • Conducts day to day layout and grading tasks in accordance to project design specifications and ensures as-built data is collected with precision and tolerance.
  • Directs or conducts surveys to establish legal boundaries for properties, based on legal deeds and titles.
  • Plans and conducts ground surveys designed to establish baselines, elevations, and other geodetic measurements.
  • Records the results of surveys, including the shape, contour, coordinates, elevations, and dimensions of existing conditions and as-builts via charts, plots, maps, handbooks, and other reports related to the survey for the Project Team.
  • Communicates and illustrates survey findings with respect to the IFC designs for the Project Team, Clients, Engineers, Architects, and other personnel working on the project.
  • Computes geodetic measurements and interprets survey data to determine positions, shapes, and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.
  • Interprets IFC drawing sets and project specifications from PDF and CAD formats to support accurate site layout, construction planning, and execution.
  • Coordinates with the Survey Manager and the Tools and Equipment Manager to obtain all required materials for the duration of the project.
  • Oversees field logistics and inspections of pre-construction, construction and post construction work while serving as a liaison between Subcontractors, Consultants, and Site Superintendents.
  • Manages and oversees the completion of required documentation, including the daily log, safety documentation, time sheets, labour quantities, packing slips, and purchases.
  • Performs other duties that may be assigned as necessary.


Health, Safety, and Environmental:

  • Adheres to all safety procedures and regulatory compliance.
  • Communicates and enforces safety standards in conjunction with the Health, Safety, and Environmental Officer.


Quality:

What You Will Need to Succeed:

  • 3+ years working as a land surveyor or in a closely related role (e.g., land survey technologist) in the construction industry.
  • Successful completion of professional land surveyor examinations.
  • A federal or provincial land surveyor's license.
  • Must have strong technical understanding of surveying programs such as AutoCAD, MicroSurvey, Revit, Trimble Business Center, Trimble Siteworks, and Leica iCON software.
  • Experience using Cloud-Based Construction Management Platforms such as Trimble WorksManager, Trimble WorksOS and/or Leica ConX.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of the construction industry and construction specifications, methods and procedures.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Level II Secret Government clearance.

Job Description

We are currently seeking a qualified Estimator / Quantity Surveyor to join our site-based Construction team. This role is responsible for the review, analysis, verification, and maintenance of Mechanical (Piping, Ventilation, Equipment) or Electrical & Instrumentation installation quantities. You will work closely with Engineering, Procurement, and Construction teams to support accurate scope quantification and cost forecasting across a range of Mining, Energy, and Infrastructure projects. You will have the opportunity to work on the Hatch and Bantrel Joint Venture (HBJV) to execute engineering and construction on the BHP Jansen Potash Mine Project in Saskatchewan. After successfully completing the Definition Phase Study for the project, the HBJV is currently carrying out the Detailed Engineering Phase for the Processing, Non-Process Infrastructure (NPI) and Mining Areas of the 4.5 Mtpa Stage 1 Potash Mine. With a published TIC of US $5.3-5.7 Billion this will represent one of the largest projects and private investments in Canada. The HBJV will use a hybrid of best-in-class new developing technologies and systems as well as the proven HBJV suite of tools to execute this exciting project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and analyze engineering drawings, documents, and 3D models to verify installation quantities.
  • Identify and reconcile differences between offsite (modular) and onsite scopes.
  • Break down scope by Construction Work Areas and execution packages.
  • Interface with subcontractors to review and agree on package quantities and scope changes.
  • Maintain up-to-date cost forecasts and support valuation and schedule adjustments.
  • Perform quantity take-offs from 2D drawings, isometrics, and models at varying levels of design maturity.
  • Identify gaps between engineering deliverables and required installation quantities.
  • Maintain audit trails of quantity revisions due to engineering changes or field conditions.
  • Participate in site meetings and present findings with clear documentation of assumptions and qualifications.
  • Audit projects to ensure accuracy of quantified scope.
Qualifications

  • Education & Certification:

    • Technical diploma, construction trade certification, or Gold Seal Estimator designation or Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) designation from CIQS or equivalent (e.g., MRICS, CEC)
    • Continuing professional development in Estimating, Quantity Surveying, or Project Controls.
  • Experience:
    • 6–12 years in estimating or project controls, with site-based experience in heavy industrial construction.
    • Proven expertise in either process piping and mechanical equipment or electrical and instrumentation disciplines.
    • Experience in stakeholder management.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient in Excel, Navisworks, BlueBeam, SmartPlant, and Power BI.
    • Skilled in quantity take-offs from construction documents of varying maturity.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills for reporting and stakeholder engagement.
