Key Responsibilities:

  • Enforce health and safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment in compliance with company and regulatory standards.

  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Job Summary

The Site Superintendent represents a critical core competence that has direct impact on the success of Fermar Paving Ltd. (“the Company”). The incumbent is responsible to ensure all work performed on site leads to the successful completion of assigned Projects (in the range $5m - $15m). All issues/decisions/actions are subject to review and/or approval by a Senior Site Superintendent or Operations Manager. Site Superintendent may also be responsible for specific tasks on larger, complex projects under the direction of a Senior Site Superintendent. Site Superintendent will act as back up to Senior Site Superintendent fulfilling all duties of this level on a temporary basis when required.

This role oversees project site work processes and is responsible for construction activities within the established design, budget and scheduling guidelines. This includes planning, scheduling, organizing, directing, and controlling activities on project sites.

The role is responsible for timely communication and proactive coordination with other managers and sub-contractors on site, and with Customers or their agents. The role is accountable for decision-making to ensure the effective planning and utilization of material and human resources on site that prevents conflicts in workflow to ensure that work is completed safely, accurately, on time, and meets Company quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership Oversight

  • Accountable for planning workforce and materials needs, ensuring all assigned Projects and tasks are efficiently and profitably managed and completed.
  • The role is the key contact for reviewing and resolving issues and concerns with Project performance, P&L, sub-contractors, suppliers, A/R (invoicing), and claims.
  • Provides direction and/or support to Sub-contractors, Project Managers, Junior Superintendents, Project Coordinator, Field Engineers, and Foremen who may be assigned to the site.
  • Ensures Company safe operating procedures are being followed for all work undertaken on site with a focus on achieving zero accidents/incidents.

Planning/Financial

  • Collaborates with the Project Manager in the development of estimates, budgets and work schedules for assigned projects. This includes preparing bi-weekly schedules.
  • Resolves Customer and Sub-contractor disputes as expeditiously as possible.
  • Reviews P & L status and cash flow forecasts for Projects, as well as Critical Path schedule, and adjusts as appropriate.
  • Keeps all stakeholders advised on status, progress, and issues related to the work site.
  • Actively participates in Close Out – Stand and Deliver Meetings providing critical information and recommendations to the executive leadership team.

Operating

  • Abiding and enforcing contract specifications and regulations e.g. OPSS TCBC with oversight from senior management.
  • Coordinates with the Project Manager to monitor progress of work completed against schedules and budget and takes actions as appropriate to ensure work is on-time and on budget. Submits schedule updates to the Project Scheduler.
  • Responsible for inspecting and approving all work on assigned site performed by Company workers and/or Subcontractors. Performance Issues are reported to Senior Site Superintendent or Operations Manager.
  • Reviews and signs off on all Health Safety and Environment inspections and reports.
  • In conjunction with the Project Manager, prepares Progress Certificates and ensures accuracy and timely submission of Progress billings.
  • Chairs weekly meetings and Two Week Look Ahead with Contractor and Sub-contractors.
  • Reviews and approves Worker daily time sheets tracking and reporting to Payroll.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum College Diploma (Civil preferred) or equivalent construction industry experience.
  • 3 to 5 years’ supervisor (people management) experience within the Construction Industry.
  • Experience in planning, scheduling and coordinating construction work - mandatory.
  • Exposure to provincial/municipal government contracts an asset.
  • Experience in Health Safety and Environment responsibilities

As a Superintendent , you will be responsible for the management of all field and site-specific construction activities, including the Chandos Production System, project design, budget, schedule, performance, subtrades, and profitability of commercial construction projects.

  • Continuously monitor project budget and forecasting to the individual phase code level and cost type for potential gains and losses
  • Provide leadership and direction for all project activities and tasks, ensuring project outcomes are delivered successfully and in compliance with all contracts and client needs
  • Ensure clear communication of project-specific roles and responsibilities for all site personnel. Provide regular and respectful feedback for all under your direction
  • Monitor company equipment and supplies to ensure the needed equipment is where it’s required.

Qualifications

  • Journeyman trade certification or equivalent experience
  • Technical diploma and/or Gold Seal certification are considered assets

  • Experience with government and institutional projects

  • Ability to pass a criminal background check
  • Proficient mastery of both oral and written communications in English

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience managing in a heavy industrial environment; rail experience is an asset
  • Experience in managing for efficiency and effectiveness in a fast-paced environment
  • Experience working with financial information and preparing budgets
  • One (1) year experience working with Safety Management Systems in an industrial environment
  • One (1) year experience developing and managing capital and operating budgets
  • Experience working with commuter / passenger railway agencies an asset
  • Mainline railway operations background in safety, training and leadership
  • Practical knowledge of railway rules and regulations

Role Summary

As a Superintendent, you will oversee field operations for the upgrade, repair, and replacement of underground utilities on complex rehabilitation projects. This position serves as a critical link between field and office teams, ensuring projects are executed safely, on time, and to specification. You will be responsible for the following:

  • Deep Utility Rehabilitation Oversight Oversee the installation, upgrade, and replacement of underground water and sewer utilities. Ensure proper construction methods and the safe use of trench boxes, slide rails, and other shoring systems.
  • Field Leadership Provide on-site leadership by directing and supporting the Foreman in managing daily crew operations. Ensure the team is properly resourced, aligned with project goals, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement and safety.
  • Safety & Compliance Promote and enforce HSE standards with a focus on confined space entry, fall protection, traffic control, and trench safety systems. Consult with the Safety Advisor to conduct regular inspections, ensure compliance, and address any safety concerns promptly.
  • Traffic & Site Management Coordinate with traffic control providers to ensure safe work in active roadways and oversee adherence to traffic accommodation plans and public safety requirements.
  • Project Communication & Coordination Serve as the primary connection between project management and field teams, ensuring clear communication of project plans, timelines, and objectives.
  • Scheduling & Milestone Tracking Monitor project progress and adjust schedules, resources, or plans as needed to meet deadlines and stay within budget.
  • Project Risk & Coordination Collaborate with project managers to identify potential risks and implement mitigation strategies that maintain safety, quality, and schedule.
  • Stakeholder Relationships Maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, and subcontractors, addressing concerns and resolving issues promptly to support project success and team collaboration.
  • Quality Assurance Confirm that installations meet design specifications and are ready for inspection. Address any deficiencies promptly to maintain quality standards.


Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in deep underground utility construction, including 5+ years in a supervisory role focused on water and sewer replacement.
  • Expertise in trenching, shoring, and rehabilitation using trench boxes and slide rails.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings and specifications.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Deep understanding of HSE regulations, including confined space, fall protection, trench safety, and traffic control.
  • Valid drivers license with a clean record.
