A private investment office is seeking a Tax Director to take full ownership of its corporate tax function. About the Role
Reporting directly to the CEO, this position is responsible for leading all aspects of tax planning, compliance, and execution across a large and diverse group of companies and partnerships. You'll serve as the in-house authority on corporate tax strategy while managing a lean internal team and collaborating with external advisors.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead all tax-related operations across a large portfolio of operating companies, holding entities, partnerships, and joint ventures
  • Design and implement tax structures that align with long-term investment and organizational goals
  • Handle complex compliance filings, elections, and reorganizations — including special filings such as Section 50(1) and wind-ups
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external tax advisors while gradually transitioning more work in-house
  • Oversee and mentor a small internal tax support team, building out scalable workflows and controls
  • Monitor legislative changes and proactively manage risk and planning opportunities
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams including finance, legal, and ownership stakeholders
What You Bring
  • CPA designation; enrollment or completion of an advanced tax course (e.g., In-Depth) is a strong asset
  • 8+ years of progressive tax experience, ideally from: A Big 4 or national accounting firm (at the Manager or Senior Manager level), or An in-house role within a real estate investment, asset management, or private family office environment
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian tax legislation with experience in partnership taxation, reorganizations, intercompany planning, and complex multi-entity structures
  • Demonstrated ability to own the tax function independently and execute in high-volume, high-complexity environments
  • Proficiency in tax software and Excel; capable of working hands-on when required
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical insights into actionable plans

Responsibilities

  • Own the day-to-day tax compliance and reporting processes for direct and indirect taxes, from preparation to analysis and documentation.
  • Dive deep into numbers, no templates, no shortcuts, providing hands-on analysis and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate across departments to improve controls, processes, and reporting while maintaining compliance with fuel and gas regulations.

Requirements

  • 35 years of accounting experience, ideally with exposure to fuel transport, petroleum, or indirect tax (not public accounting)
  • Strong technical and analytical skills, with a natural curiosity and problem-solving mindset
  • Hands-on experience with Excel, SQL, Power BI, and Tableau
  • Knowledge of Canadian GAAP practices and experience working with auditors

  • Extensive experience leading client engagements, managing multi-layered tax issues, and presenting directly to stakeholders

  • Deep familiarity with entity taxation (S Corp, C Corp, partnership) and individual taxation including estate, gift, and fiduciary tax matters

  • Working knowledge of multi-state tax compliance for privately held growth-stage entities

  • A proven leader who inspires confidence, promotes collaboration, and cultivates long-term client and team relationships

Compensation & Role Structure:

  • Base Salary Range: $142,500 - $263,000 CAD (commensurate with experience)

  • Bonus: Performance-based and tied to firm-level and individual goals

  • Location: On-site role at the Toronto headquarters (hybrid flexibility considered case-by-case)

  • Relocation: Not offered at this time
