Job Description
A private investment office is seeking a Tax Director to take full ownership of its corporate tax function. This is a high-impact leadership role for someone looking to step into an entrepreneurial environment, work closely with executive leadership, and play a central part in the continued growth and optimization of a complex private enterprise structure.
About the Role
Reporting directly to the CEO, this position is responsible for leading all aspects of tax planning, compliance, and execution across a large and diverse group of companies and partnerships. You'll serve as the in-house authority on corporate tax strategy while managing a lean internal team and collaborating with external advisors.
This is a rare opportunity for an energetic, self-motivated tax professional who thrives in dynamic settings and wants to influence real business outcomes at the highest level.
What You’ll Do
- Lead all tax-related operations across a large portfolio of operating companies, holding entities, partnerships, and joint ventures
- Design and implement tax structures that align with long-term investment and organizational goals
- Handle complex compliance filings, elections, and reorganizations — including special filings such as Section 50(1) and wind-ups
- Serve as the primary liaison with external tax advisors while gradually transitioning more work in-house
- Oversee and mentor a small internal tax support team, building out scalable workflows and controls
- Monitor legislative changes and proactively manage risk and planning opportunities
- Collaborate closely with internal teams including finance, legal, and ownership stakeholders
- CPA designation; enrollment or completion of an advanced tax course (e.g., In-Depth) is a strong asset
- 8+ years of progressive tax experience, ideally from: A Big 4 or national accounting firm (at the Manager or Senior Manager level), or An in-house role within a real estate investment, asset management, or private family office environment
- Strong knowledge of Canadian tax legislation with experience in partnership taxation, reorganizations, intercompany planning, and complex multi-entity structures
- Demonstrated ability to own the tax function independently and execute in high-volume, high-complexity environments
- Proficiency in tax software and Excel; capable of working hands-on when required
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical insights into actionable plans
This is not your typical tax role. You’ll have full visibility into business strategy and the chance to shape a modern, internal tax function in an entrepreneurial setting. The organization offers direct access to executive decision-makers, a fast-paced environment that values autonomy, and the opportunity to build something from the ground up.
