Reporting Relationship

The Teacher Assistant will work under the direction of the Classroom Teacher and School Principal.

Position Summary

The Teacher Assistant is responsible for the provision of classroom support and instruction where applicable.

Essential Functions

  • Assist students with lessons under direct supervision of classroom teacher
  • Monitor and report to classroom teacher on student progress
  • Assist in preparation of learning materials and learning environment
  • Accompany and supervise students during activities in school gymnasiums, laboratories, libraries, resource centre and on field trips
  • Assist special needs students with mobility, communication and personal hygiene
  • Prepare classroom displays and bulletin boards
  • Assist the teacher in the operation office equipment (i.e., computers, tape recorders and photocopier, etc.)
  • Carry out behaviour modification, personal development and other therapeutic programs under supervision of professionals such as special education instructors, speech and language pathologists
  • Monitor students during recesses and lunch breaks
  • May assist with preparing tests and worksheets
  • Interact effectively with students
  • Assist in school library or office other areas as assigned by Classroom Teacher and the School Principal
  • Assist in instructing of students in the Ojibwe language and provide related programming where applicable

Qualifications & Requirements


Preferred, College Diploma in related field of education or equivalent or social services with a minimum of two (2) years

work/volunteer related experience with the completion of secondary school or equivalent


Minimum, College Diploma in a related field of study or five (5) years work experience in related field

Other, Good rapport with young people

  • Good interpersonal skills, dependable, reliable and willingness to work in cooperation within a strong team environment
  • Must have knowledge and/or experience with the culture, history and customs of the Anishnaabe
  • Understanding and fluency in Anishinabemowin is a strong asset; or must be willing to learn the language
  • First Aid Certificate and CPR would be an assest


CRC/VSS Rationale: MChigeeng First Nation and its agents are in a position of trust in services to band member children and/or vulnerable adults, so a safe and secure working environment is mandatory. What We Are Looking For:

  • Experience supporting learning through song, craft, games, and structured academic play
  • Confidence supervising preschool-aged children with consistent expectations and a calm tone

  • Familiarity with Montessori /Reggio approaches is an asset

Qualifications:

  • ECA, RCA, or equivalent certification in early childhood education or care is valued
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in a Canadian licensed preschool, academic childcare centre, or JKGrade 1 classroom
  • Fluent in spoken and written English with strong communication and documentation skills
  • Current Vulnerable Sector Screening, updated immunization records, and CPR-C/First Aid certification
  • Preference will be given to candidates currently residing in the Kitchener-Waterloo area
