Location: Edmonton, AB
Industry: Building Materials / Structural Design (Commercial & Institutional Projects)
Compensation: Salary + Bonus + Benefits + Vacation

Our client, a leader in commercial and institutional construction supply, is seeking a Technical Design Lead to oversee and guide the design process for a variety of mid-rise wood-frame and mixed-material structures. This role is ideal for an experienced design professional with strong technical skills, hands-on construction knowledge, and the ability to mentor a growing design team.

About the Role

Reporting to senior leadership, the Technical Design Lead will oversee the technical scope for truss, beam, and related structural components within commercial and institutional projects such as long-term care facilities, townhomes, and mid-rise apartment buildings (up to six stories in wood). You will work closely with project managers, estimators, and sales to ensure accurate, efficient, and compliant design deliverables.

This position requires a strong background in structural design, the ability to navigate and review 3D models, and a practical understanding of construction methods. You'll also be responsible for coaching less experienced designers and ensuring a high standard of file management and drawing quality across the team.

Key Responsibilities
· Lead the technical design process for truss and beam systems within commercial, institutional, and multi-family projects.

· Review, modify, and oversee design files for accuracy, compliance, and constructability.

· Utilize MiTek software for truss and component design, leverage AutoCAD skills and, ideally, familiarity with Revit or other BIM software for structured file management and collaboration.

· Collaborate with estimators, project managers, and sales teams to produce complete bid packages.

· Coach and mentor design staff, providing guidance on technical best practices and project execution.

· Oversee project coordination between design and production, ensuring deadlines and budgets are met.

· Serve as the key technical resource for problem-solving during both the bid and build phases.

Qualifications
· Diploma or degree in Architectural Technology, Civil/Structural Engineering Technology, or related discipline.

· 5+ years of experience in structural design, preferably with commercial, institutional, or multi-family projects.

· Proficiency in MiTek (or willingness to learn quickly), with strong AutoCAD skills; Revit/BIM experience is an asset.

· Strong understanding of mid-rise wood construction, engineered products, and hybrid structural systems.

· Proven ability to lead and mentor technical teams.

· Experience coordinating with multiple stakeholders, including general contractors, engineering firms, and internal departments.

· Practical knowledge of construction sequencing, site constraints, and installation requirements.

Why Join?

Competitive salary plus performance bonus.

Comprehensive benefits,vacation and RRSP matching.

Opportunity to lead technical innovation in a growing commercial division.

Work on diverse, high-profile projects that combine structural complexity with architectural detail.

If you are a technically strong designer with leadership ability and a passion for delivering accurate, buildable solutions, we'd like to hear from you.
