PROGRAM SUMMARY:
Smithers & District Transit provides public transportation, 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday, with a combination of a curb-to-curb service (in the Smithers & Regional District only) and a bus route service operating between Telkwa, Smithers and Witset.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Transit Driver is responsible for providing Transit Driver services as scheduled.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to:Smithers & District Transit Manager

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Administration:
- Maintains appropriate and accurate records and ensures all reports and billings are completed on schedule.
- Keeps the Transit Program Manager apprised of difficult situations and makes recommendations regarding solutions.
2. Transit Driver:
- Performs Bus Driver duties as scheduled.
- Completes daily pre and post trip inspection reports.
- Ensures the confidentiality of client information.
- Ensures every precaution is taken to prevent loss or damage of the bus.
- Keeps the bus clean and maintained in proper working order at all times.
- Be knowledgeable of all aspects of the transit system in order to provide helpful, supportive and courteous service to everyone coming in contact with Smithers Transit.
- Provides physical assistance to passengers as required.
- Collects all fares and accounts for all transit revenue on a regular basis.
- Sells tickets and bus passes and accounts for all revenue collected from this source.
- Performs other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
- Grade 12 Diploma
- Possess a valid Class 4 Drivers License.
- A Defensive Driving Certificate would be an asset.
Note: SCSA is willing to support and cover the cost of training for the right candidate to obtain their Class 4 Unrestricted License, after completing one full year of employment.
Knowledge and Experience
- Maintains current certification in Occupational First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
- A clean driving record.
- Experience driving physically and mentally handicapped people.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to handle and assist clients using wheelchairs walkers and other ambulatory aids.
- Ability to maintain unrelated files and records.

- Possess a full range of sense of hearing, including tone, pitch, and volume when operating transit vehicle, using 2-way radio, and assisting passengers and public
- Must have good manual dexterity in order to perform the basic functions of the MDT keypad. Required to reach, grasp, and use multiple objects which include but are not limited to: a 2-way radio, door control, PA microphone, steering wheel, wheelchair lift control, and bus door control
- Required to sit while operating vehicle approximately 75% of the work day. The remaining 25% of the day will require the operator to move both in the internal and exterior perimeters of the bus, including a pre-trip inspection of the vehicle by walking around and through the vehicle
- Ability to push/pull tension of at least 50 pounds and ability to bend and stoop/kneel to assist passengers boarding and securing in wheelchair/scooters and/or to retrieve equipment. Twist at the knee and waist when operating vehicle, performing vehicle inspections, and securing wheelchairs. Reach forward, rearward, upward, and downward when operating vehicle, performing vehicle inspections, and securing wheelchairs
- Subject to wet, cold, and/or hot environmental conditions
- Subject to a low risk of injury due to vehicle accident, mechanical failure, fire, and/or explosion
- Subject to vehicle noise and vibration while operating transit vehicle
- Subject to vehicle exhaust fumes and odors, road dusts, and mist
