Reporting to the Director of Underwriting, the Underwriter will be responsible for evaluating new business requests for legal expense insurance quotes, rate risks and finalize quotations within underwriting authority.
What will you do?
- Monitor, analyse and interpret exposure and profitability of existing legal expense insurance accounts and rate renewal quotations.
- Take responsibility for policy wordings and diligent literature management, ensuring all contractual obligations are carried out in a timely fashion.
- Identify any concerns or trends that could impact ARAG, our products / services, or product performance, and communicate findings through appropriate channels.
- Enhance processes, develop new tools and act as a technical referral point for the Underwriting Department.
- Coach and mentor members of the Underwriting Department.
- Focus on retaining and developing existing business, through excellent customer service.
- Build effective working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
- Manage your time to ensure that all work is completed on time and to the highest standard, ensuring that you are delivering what you have promised to our internal and external customers.
- Where required attending customer meetings, potentially at customer's premises.
About You:
- 1-3 years of insurance underwriting experience with detailed knowledge of technical principles, procedures, and systems.
- College diploma or University degree or equivalent work experience, preferably in a quantitative field like mathematics, mathematical economics, natural sciences, or related
- High proficiency in Microsoft Office, in particular Microsoft Excel
- Excellent customer service and written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work as a member of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision and a problem-solving mindset.
Not required, but considered an asset:
- Bilingual in French & English
- First experience with R programming language, SQL or Microsoft PowerBI.

About the Team
The Underwriting Team assesses applications to sell and build new residential homes in Ontario, whether these are freehold homes or condominiums. The Underwriting Team also addresses application-related inquiries from Vendors and Builders. The Underwriting process involves assessing the financial and technical risks associated with an application, and proposing the appropriate terms and conditions based on the analysis conducted. Areas of focus include financial risk to assess the feasibility of a project and an applicant's ability to meet warranty obligations; history, to assess past projects and warranty performance; and technical risk, to assess the applicant's technical capabilities vis-a-vis the construction plans proposed. The Underwriting team works in collaboration with various other departments within Tarion to complete risk assessments and to issue terms and conditions.
As an Underwriter, you are a dynamic, customer-focused individual who thrives in a high-volume, collaborative environment. You are risk-minded and have a background in underwriting. You can analyze financial statements, review legal documentation, and provide a summary and recommendations for risk assessments.
This is a hybrid role requiring working two (2) days in the office and three (3) days remotely, per week. (All remote work must be completed from your home office within the province of Ontario.)
Responsibilities include:
- Analyze builder's performance and financial strength to assess the builder's risk to determine terms and conditions, including limits and security requirements of the Builder
- Review complex financial structures and credit information for vendor/builders
- Monitor ongoing performance and terms and conditions to ensure compliance
- Provide quality customer service to resolve conflicts between the builder and program requirements
- Resolve/settle registration issues
- Ad-hoc department projects and duties

In addition to underwriting a portfolio, this role will support evaluating credit risk, collateral requirements, and contract review.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for the production and underwriting of an assigned book of new and renewal business, including analysis of risk, negotiation of policy terms & conditions, fees, and collateral (amount and form), to ensure appropriate profitability and consistency with Liberty Mutual’s corporate strategy.
- Work closely with team members, management, Liberty Mutual Canada underwriting teams across Canada, and other Liberty business units to leverage multi-line business opportunities.
- Maintain and expand broker and client relationships through regular marketing activities, active prospecting of account rounding opportunities, and the development of a pipeline of new clients.
- Demonstrate effective prioritization of workload and provide superior customer service.
- Recommend and execute innovative concepts to improve the efficiency of the renewal process and general ease of doing business.
- Effective at managing internal and external meetings with professionalism and clarity while driving mutual accountability for results.
- Continuous learning and development through attendance of industry events, relevant seminars, and courses, and learning from existing Liberty expertise. Including developing and expanding expertise in underwriting, risk analysis, financial statement analysis, collateral assessment, legal and legislative trends, and providing recommendations to management on changes in strategy to address any emerging trends.
- Ensure proper organization and documentation of underwriting files.
- Maintain financial analysis of portfolio for actuals compared to plan and forecast, as well as governance over key deliverables to clients.

Skills & Qualifications:
- Motivated, client service oriented, and highly responsive.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in Fronting and/or Underwriting Property & Casualty lines, specifically commercial Auto, and/or broking.
- Financial acumen and ability to review financial statements/credit risk is an asset.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills with a strong ability to multi-task.
- Highly effective communication skills.
- Strong ability to negotiate and confident decision maker.
- Self-starter with strong analytical skills, in addition to strong business and interpersonal skills.

- Relevant insurance designations/education is an asset.

About the Role:

We are looking for highly motivated Mortgage Underwriters who can manage mortgage deals', underwriting, and approval processes to develop and contribute to the growth of the business! Working alongside our Mortgage Agents to help fund deals. Requirements
A snapshot of a typical week:
- Provide advice and solutions to clients to meet their individual needs
- Complete and assess mortgage applications, perform credit checks, searches, and other related underwriting requirements
- Ensure mortgage applications meet compliance requirements and adhere to lender policies and guidelines
- Perform due diligence on all underwriting-related documentation
- Prepare Signature and Compliance packages
- Stay up to date with the processing requirements and ensure loan submission follows the required steps and processes
- Correspond with clients' lawyers and appraisers to ensure efficient workflow to coincide with closing dates
- Collaborate and build relationships with lenders.
Success in this role requires:
- Mortgage Brokerage experience is highly preferred.
- Being a driven, self-starter, problem-solver, and organized great communicator.
- 3+ years of experience as a Mortgage Underwriter, preferably within a Brokerage.
- Being proficient with technology and the ability to work efficiently and effectively within a Mac-based environment using multiple software platforms
- Within 45 minutes drive to our Yonge/Sheppard office
- Mortgage License (required)
