Your Contribution to NRSI
NRSI is looking for a locally-situated, motivated and independent individuals to conduct field monitoring activities, primarily conducting wildlife mortality searches at operating wind energy facilities near Medicine Hat, Alberta. This position provides an opportunity to gain experience in visual bird and bat identification, to implement scientific methods, and to collect and analyze data employing a high attention to detail. This position will report to one of NRSI’s Renewable Energy Project Managers or Field Coordinators. The primary duties and responsibilities for this role will include:
- Taking well-organized and detailed field notes,
- Communicating frequently with project managers, other field staff, and clients,
- Conducting searches according to a strict schedule and safely collecting and handling bird and bat carcasses,
- Driving a 4WD vehicle (provided to employee) on rough roads,
- Occasional assistance with other field- or office-related tasks.
- A post-secondary degree or diploma, or high school diploma.
- Willing and able to work under inclement weather, in a variety of environmental and vegetation conditions, for long hours, and occasionally on holidays or weekends
- Physically fit in order to walk for several hours each day in potentially challenging terrain.
- Demonstrated interest in wildlife and the environment, including the desire to pursue a career in this field.
- A good work ethic and positive attitude, dependability, flexibility, and excellent communication.
- Ability to work independently on a regular basis.
- Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail, including the maintenance of well-organized and detailed field notes.
- Able to reliably commute to the field work location on a regular basis by the start date
- A valid driver's license and over 18 years old in order to drive a rental vehicle.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR Certification.
- Experience in the identification of birds and/or bats by sight.
- Experience conducting wildlife surveys, soil assessments, vegetation inventories, or delineating vegetation communities using standard survey protocols.
- A reliable personal vehicle insured for work purposes, with at least $2 million in liability insurance (authorized mileage will be reimbursed)

This position provides an opportunity to gain experience in visual bird and bat identification, to implement scientific methods, and to collect and analyze data with a high attention to detail. The primary duties and responsibilities for this role include:
- Taking well-organized and detailed field notes,
- Communicating frequently with project managers, other field staff, and clients,
- Conducting searches according to a strict schedule, and safely collecting and handling bird and bat carcasses,
- Carcass searches around wind turbines or around solar panels and fence lines, and walking transects in order to find bird and bat mortalities. Once found, data on the specific mortalities is collected with high attention to detail, and all carcasses are stored by NRSI.
- Trials to determine carcass removal rate by scavengers or other means, by placing carcasses on the ground at the facility, and monitoring over time;
- Trials to determine how many of the carcasses are found by the searcher; and
- Data entry and analysis, including sending email summaries and syncing collected field data each day.
- Occasional assistance with other field- or office-related tasks.

Partner Staffing is currently working with our client to find an Intermediate Wildlife Biologist for our Biophysical Team, based out of our Calgary, Alberta office. The Biophysical division provides an overall environmental planning and management approach for new developments and operational programs. Key services include regulatory approval applications, pre-disturbance site assessments, and environmental monitoring.
Description
Work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals including Agrologists, Air Quality Specialists, Biologists, Engineers, Foresters, and Hydrogeologists, and provide technical leadership and guidance on wildlife biology and regulations.Provide leadership and mentorship to the existing wildlife team and oversee all aspects of data collection, quality assurance, and reporting.Develop and execute biophysical assessments for wildlife and wildlife habitat – with additional specialized areas of expertise is beneficial (i.e. caribou, bats, avian, amphibians).Develop quality scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules.Provide guidance, training (field and office), and direction to junior and intermediate team members to ensure the completion and accuracy of project scopes of work.Prepare, review, and edit technical proposals, regulatory applications, and reports.Stay current on the applicable provincial and federal legislation and general trends in the technical field.Assist with the preparation and development of best practices, standards, and procedures for our clients to mitigate project risks and support operations.Support the growth of the biophysical division by developing relationships with existing and future clients as well as government and regulatory agencies.RequirementsAt least 5 years of consulting experience related to biology, preferably conducting, and managing wildlife studies.B.Sc. or M.Sc. Degree in biology, environmental science, or a related field.Member of the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.Strong wildlife identification skills, especially for birds (visual and auditory).Extensive experience designing and leading wildlife programs, including wildlife and wildlife habitat surveys, breeding bird surveys, amphibian surveys, reptile surveys, and pre-construction nest sweeps.Working knowledge of the Water Act, Alberta Wildlife Act, Public Lands Act, Species at Risk Act, Migratory Bird Convention Act, and the Master Schedule of Standards of Conditions related to Alberta’s Enhanced Approval Process (EAP).Detail-oriented with strong time management and leadership skills.Strong field skills and the ability to transfer field knowledge to junior and intermediate staff.Effective technical writing skills, including report and proposal preparation, and experience to provide technical reviews and edits.Knowledge on wetland and aquatic habitat assessments for wetland impact reporting and project mitigation would be seen as beneficial.Partner Staffing is Bringing Talent to Business.
