Position Summary:

The Youth Support Worker is responsible for providing programming to youth in care between the ages of 13-21, which is designed to facilitate their successful integration within the community. The programming will consist of planning, coordinating and delivering services geared to address the individual physical, emotional, social, cultural and intellectual needs of youth.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Be familiar with and provide services in compliance with relevant legislation, ministry regulations and standards, and agency policies and procedures.
  • Complete documentation in accordance with prescribed agency, ministry and legal standards.
  • Demonstrated skills in counselling and training.
  • Thorough knowledge of community resources available.

Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid Class G Ontario Driver's Licence and have access to a reliable vehicle with OPCF6A Insurance endorsement and minimum of $1000 000.00 Liability

About the Role:

The Youth Support Worker at YMCA of Northern Alberta provides direct service delivery to youth ages 12-17 who are experiencing multiple risk factors in their lives. The Youth Support Worker is responsible for the effective planning, implementation and evaluation of program services, including the development and facilitation of workshops to program participants who have had interactions with law enforcement or are at risk of gang involvement. At all times, the Youth Support Worker will demonstrate excellent communication and service skills while working with diverse populations who face unique challenges. The Youth Support Worker acts ethically and professionally in accordance with all YMCA policies and procedures, standards of conduct and practice, health and safety standards, child protection standards and contractual, legal and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement, evaluate services/workshops and perform case management as per Standards of Practice guidelines and funder mandates. Comply with funder mandates for participation and promotion requirements.
  • Develop and facilitate 1:1 and Group based workshops for youth involved with or at risk of involvement in the criminal justice system. Workshops will be held both in person and virtually.
  • Engage and collaborate with multiple stakeholders working with justice involved youth, including Edmonton Police Services, Edmonton Young Offenders Centre, and other relevant organizations within the youth criminal justice system.
  • Collect necessary information to confirm eligibility and complete participant intake and/or assessment to inform ongoing participant supports. Support participants and their natural supports within YMCA guidelines and adhere to the contracted performance outcomes.
  • Engage with community agencies, and other organizations to maximize services and resources to participants.
  • Know and reviews all emergency procedures, follows all guidelines from Risk Management and Health & Safety including but not limited to; Work Alone Policy and Procedures and the Children, Youth and Vulnerable Adults Protection Policies and Procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant services and community resources related to the Social Determinants of Health.
  • Collect data, including outcomes to inform and contribute to the development of funder and YMCA reports

Qualifications:

  • University Diploma or Degree in Human Services field or relevant equivalent, such as Criminology, Sociology, Corrections, or Psychology.
    2 years of experience working directly with youth and/or young adults with multiple risk factors
  • Working knowledge of the Youth Criminal Justice Act
  • Working knowledge of issues related to the Social Determinants of Health and the Transtheoretical Model of Change.
  • Experience with individual assessment, case management, group work, group facilitation, program promotion, program planning and outcome evaluation
  • Working knowledge in supportive counselling skills, motivational interviewing, culturally sensitive practice and trauma-informed
  • Working knowledge of related community, housing, education, employment, justice, family, and human services resources
  • Standard First Aid and CPR-C, Police Intervention Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, Child Intervention Check
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Suicide Intervention Certification are preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license and vehicle, proof of insurance and a clear drivers abstract.
  • Experience developing and facilitating workshops
  • Annual registration in a professional organization as required by law
  • Must obtain employer specific WHIMIS and child abuse prevention training within 30 days of hire date

Education
The purposes of this position are:
 

  • To deliver educational and counseling programs and services within the administrative policies and procedures established by the Executive Director and as directed by the Director of Education through the Manager of Provincial and Special Education.
  • To develop and deliver the Curve Lake First Nation’s support programs and services for students attending Secondary School
  • To develop and deliver academic tutoring/support, career development and personal counseling programs Secondary students

The duties and responsibilities of this position are categorized into four main functions:
 
  1. Academic Counseling/Tutoring
  • Responsible for monitoring progress for all Curve Lake First Nation students
  • Assisting students with tutoring and provision of any academic assistance as required
  • Assists students in collecting missed work
  • Provide a more culturally comfortable learning environment
  • Communicate with teachers on the progress of Curve Lake students
  • Communicate with students/parents on issues and progress when necessary
  • Attend lessons when necessary
  • Track the progress of students who have expressed special needs
  • Represents CLFN students at TASSS student success meetings
  • Works with the CLFN Youth Support Worker to deliver social/emotional support services for students
  • Work with the CLFN Post-Secondary Officer to assist students in the transition to secondary programs and in the preparation for graduation with the goals for achieving entrance to post-secondary programs
 
  1. Career Development and Counseling
  • Responsible for providing career counseling and identifying/developing career paths with clients at the secondary levels, to include course selection grades 9-12

  1. Personal Development and Counseling
  • Responsible for providing personal counseling for students or for making referrals to appropriate agencies or departments
  • Assists students in their transition to new schools and monitors and assists them in their progress

  • Maintains CLFN Resource Room
  • Assists in the acquisition of funding and other services on behalf of students and monitors and assists them in the process (i.e. school trips, extra-curricular activities, sports and snack program)

PLEA Community Services is currently seeking a Regular Full-Time Youth Support Worker for our U-Turn/U-Link team located in Port Coquitlam, BC. The proposed start date for this position is as soon as possible. This position requires BCGEU membership.

The Youth Support Worker engages the youth in one-to-one activities, helping them reach their long-term goals around success, well-being, and healthy development. The youth in this program have complex care needs related to mental health, disability, addiction, and challenging behaviour. The employee will provide close supervision and attention to the youth’s needs to teach skills in education, recreation, and healthy living.

Hours of Work: The usual hours of work are Sunday to Thursday based on a flextime scheduling arrangement, including days, evenings and weekends, of 35 working hours per week.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • A Bachelor of Arts in the social sciences or human services or a related discipline.
  • One (1) year recent experience working in programs with youth who are deemed to be high risk and have complex needs, and/or are involved in the criminal justice system, and their families/caregivers.
  • Work or volunteer experience in a residential care facility or foster home model program.

  • Maintain ongoing positive relationships with Family Caregivers and participates as part of the team responsible for improving the quality of life for the youth, addressing their individual strengths, needs, abilities and preferences consistently, and supporting their healthy development.
  • Teach life skills and community survival skills, provide emotional support and models acceptable behavior. Engage youth in acceptable recreational and social activities in the community that will build on their strengths, develop their interpersonal skills, and support their involvement in their culture to strengthen their sense of identity. Support youth towards integration and normative functioning in the community.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with youths' families/caregivers, significant others and informal support systems to maintain and strengthen these connections.
  • Respond to critical incidents and emergencies in current placements. Recognize potential crises, analyze these situations accurately and implements strategies to deal with them, and inform the manager when such situations arise. Provide on call and duty coverage for the program.
  • Maintain necessary program participant and program reports and statistics. Ensure that all records, reports and documentation pertaining to service delivery are accurate, complete and in compliance with PLEA’s policies and procedures.
  • Establish strong connections to the community, including maintaining close working relationships with all formal and informal service providers.
  • Protect and uphold confidentiality.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a self-directed, engaging, empathetic Full Time Child and Youth Support Worker to join our growing team. Reporting to the Program Coordinator, the Child and Youth Support Worker monitors and attends to the well-being and safety of all persons residing in specialized home support services, maintaining a supportive, non-judgmental, inclusive, comfortable, clean and safe living environment. The program, located in Langley, is a 24-hour emergency receiving home for youth between the ages of 12 to 19 who are in need of short-term stabilization.


Child and Youth Support Workers work with some of the most vulnerable and complex youth in the care of, or on a Youth Agreement with, the Ministry of Children and Family Development. Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience in meeting youth where theyre at, recognition of the ongoing influence of trauma and disconnection on the youth served and support building on youths strengths and passions to create meaning. Delivery of these services must be provided with an understanding of the ongoing effects of trauma, isolation and vulnerability.

Key Responsibilities
Ensures that the living environment for program participants is trauma informed, inclusive, comfortable, non-judgmental and reflective of cultural practices.
Engaging with program participants to ensure personal needs are met by promoting life skills (ex. basic personal hygiene, preparing healthy and nutritious meals, access to community resources.)
Responds to emergencies in accordance with established policies and procedures including proper notifications (supervisor, MCFD, other professionals etc.).
Engages with participants in the development of their individualized service plan including intake, assessment, goal setting, progress and transition planning.
Responsible for accurate petty cash records including counting and reporting of funds. Participates in petty cash reconciliation.
Provides transportation and accompanies program participants to support them in attending appointments and healthy community activities.
Performs housekeeping duties in support of health and safety regulations. This may include but is not limited to vacuuming, dusting, emptying garbage, sanitizing, cleaning and laundry. Reports maintenance needs to the supervisor.
Maintains yardwork including trimming, weeding and general clean up.
Maintains household supply levels by checking and restocking supplies such as groceries, personal care, emergency, and housekeeping supplies. Purchases supplies as required.
Ensures home environment is safe.
- Ensuring cupboards containing biohazardous materials, medications, sharps or cleaners are secured and accounted for.

- May be required to complete room, bag or personnel checks to ensure safety of youth, staff and home environment.
- Records, reports and responds to potential health and safety risks within home.
- Completes and reports sharps counts once per shift.
- Performs other related duties as required.

PLEA Community Services is currently seeking a Temporary Full-Time Youth Support Worker for our U-Turn/U-Link team located in Surrey, BC. This temporary contract is proposed to start as soon as possible, and end upon the return of the incumbent. This position requires BCGEU membership.

The Youth Support Worker engages the youth in one-to-one activities, helping them reach their long-term goals around success, well-being, and healthy development. The youth in this program have complex care needs related to mental health, disability, addiction, and challenging behaviour. The employee will provide close supervision and attention to the youth’s needs to teach skills in education, recreation, and healthy living.

Hours of Work: The usual hours of work are Tuesday to Saturday based on a flextime scheduling arrangement, including days and evenings, of 35 working hours per week.

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • A Bachelor of Arts in the social sciences or human services or a related discipline.
  • One (1) year recent experience working in programs with youth who are deemed to be high risk and have complex needs, and/or are involved in the criminal justice system, and their families/caregivers.
  • Work or volunteer experience in a residential care facility or foster home model program.

  • Provide close supervision and support in the community that will assist youth to achieve their individual goals, maintain their motivation to make safer choices, improve their behavior, develop new interests and connections, and feel successful.
  • Implement interventions that address the complex personal, social and healthcare needs of the youth, and recognizes the contextual dynamics they are experiencing. Provide opportunities to access and reconnect to available resources in the community that will enable and encourage youth to develop the necessary educational, personal, social, vocational and self-advocacy skills. Include such community resources as an integral part of the youth’s case management plan.
  • Maintain ongoing positive relationships with Family Caregivers and participates as part of the team responsible for improving the quality of life for the youth, addressing their individual strengths, needs, abilities and preferences consistently, and supporting their healthy development.
  • Teach life skills and community survival skills, provide emotional support and models acceptable behavior. Engage youth in acceptable recreational and social activities in the community that will build on their strengths, develop their interpersonal skills, and support their involvement in their culture to strengthen their sense of identity. Support youth towards integration and normative functioning in the community.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with youths' families/caregivers, significant others and informal support systems to maintain and strengthen these connections.
  • Respond to critical incidents and emergencies in current placements. Recognize potential crises, analyze these situations accurately and implements strategies to deal with them, and inform the manager when such situations arise. Provide on call and duty coverage for the program.
  • Maintain necessary program participant and program reports and statistics. Ensure that all records, reports and documentation pertaining to service delivery are accurate, complete and in compliance with PLEA’s policies and procedures.

Position Summary

The Child Welfare Worker is responsible for the provision of a broad range of child welfare services including intake, assessment, and clinical intervention with children and their families. They are required to conduct investigations, provide emergency services, make application to the court and ensure that the needs of the children living either in their own home or in care, are met. Child Welfare Workers are assigned to a specific service stream, but may be required to work in multiple or different service streams at any given time.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Be familiar with and provide services in compliance with relevant legislation, ministry regulations and standards, and agency policies and procedures.
