The Youth Support Programmer is a crucial part of YW Calgary’s team, dedicated to supporting youth residing in our domestic violence crisis shelter and affordable housing program. This role involves developing, implementing and evaluating engaging and impactful programs that cater to the diverse needs of young people. This position focuses on creating a structured, enriching, and trauma-informed environment that fosters resilience, emotional well-being, and positive growth for children and youth. This position works collaboratively with staff, families and external resources to advocate for the needs of youth and ensuring their voices are heard and valued.
The role is based at YW Calgary's Crisis shelter, involving office work and program facilitation, typically full-time (37.5 hours/week), with flexible hours for evenings and weekends.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Assisting with program design, implementation and evaluation of engaging, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive youth programs, including the afterschool program and other enrichment opportunities
- Facilitate social-emotional learning (SEL) initiatives to build resilience and emotional well-being in young people
- Plan, execute and participate in creative activities, workshops, and field trips that align with the interests and needs of youth
- Ensure programs reflect the voices of participants by regularly engaging with them for feedback and input
- Engage in continuous learning and growth in your understanding of social-emotional learning, youth development and evidence-based practices
- Act as a key advocate for the mental, emotional and social well-being of youth within the shelter
Establish and foster relationships with families residing in the shelter - Collaborate with internal teams, including coordinators and navigators, to create holistic, impactful programming
- Build and maintain relationships with external community organizations to enhance the support network available to families and youth
- Foster a safe, inclusive and supportive environment that prioritizes the individual and collective needs of youth
- Assist the Supervisor with mentoring and supporting program staff, facilitating professional development opportunities to align with the program’s goals and based on program needs
- Support data collection, reporting, and evaluation processes to measure program effectiveness and inform future improvements
- Manage multiple tasks and priorities with strong organizational skills, ensuring efficient program delivery and alignment with the shelter’s mission and vision
- Contribute to the development of strategic initiatives that enhance service delivery and promote organizational goals
- Foster and contribute to a culture of inclusion and equity in a diverse work environment; understand and recognize that individual differences significantly contribute to YW Calgary’s success in its programs and workplace
- Understand and remain current with YW Calgary Health, Safety and Wellness policies, practices and protocols and ensure work is performed in alignment with YW’s culture
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- Diploma or degree in Child & Youth Care, Social Work, or a related Human Services field
- Certifications in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and First Aid required, brain story and indigenous awareness or equivalent
- Knowledge and experience working with youth
- Experience in crisis intervention, domestic violence, suicide risk assessment and mental health preferred
- Experience working with vulnerable populations and familiarity with community resources
- Specific skills and abilities/technical knowledge
- Proficiency in computers, databases and case notes
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong self-regulation and self-awareness in high pressure crisis environments

- Understand Bill C-92 and jurisdiction.
- Attend family court and maintain current records of clients and follow up on active cases to ensure safety of children.

- Plan family camps and activities for clients.

Requirements

- Must be familiar with Trauma Informed Practice and able to identify warning signs of abuse, trauma, physical and mental instability and substance dependency.
- Ability to provide services in a professional manner.
- Must have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Valid driver’s license and own vehicle.
- Knowledge of Aboriginal culture in general and Nlaka’pamux culture and history.

Position Overview:
The Youth Recovery Support Worker position will work with youth within the Supportive Recovery Program. The goal of the program is to build protective factors and mitigate risk factors for youth who have identified substance use as a barrier in their life. The role of the Youth Recovery Support Worker is to support youth with life skills and support/assistance to the youth regarding their individualized case plan around their substance use and recovery goals. This role will work with team in a holistic approach in regard to each youths individual needs around mental health, life skills, community supports, housing and other identified areas. Youth Recovery Support Workers will also help to prepare the recovery programming for the youth as well as help to facilitate and prepare other activities such as outings, physical education, and life skills development.
This is a permanent, full-time position working Thursday to Saturday and every other Wednesday from 10:00pm to 8:00am. The hourly wage range is 26.74 - 31.00 per hour dependent on experience and related skills. The Awake Overnight position receives a 2.00 premium in addition to the base hourly wage for working awake overnight shifts. The successful candidate can expect to enter the organization no higher than the midpoint of the compensation range.
Education & Experience
- Possess a relevant bachelors degree such as Social Work or Child & Youth Care and will have a minimum of 2-3 years experience working with vulnerable populations and at-risk youth. Other combinations of education, experience and training may be considered
- Experience working within the recovery and addiction community, knowledge of SMART Recovery programming is an asset

In partnership with Niagara Region and Youth Wellness Hubs Ontario (YWHO), Bridges Niagara is seeking a passionate, responsible, and creative professional to serve as a Care Coordinator and Peer Support Worker for newcomer youth (ages 12–25). As part of the Youth Wellness Team, this role combines case management with lived/living experience of mental health and/or substance use to provide both practical support and peer-informed guidance. The Care Coordinator/Peer Support works collaboratively with youth and a multidisciplinary team to help identify goals, navigate services at the Niagara YWHO site and in the broader community, and build skills, connections, and continuity of care. This includes one-on-one and group-based support, as well as engagement with families, caregivers, and other service providers to ensure holistic, youth centered care.
About YWHO:
YWHO supports local service providers to work together to provide young people in Ontario aged 12 to 25 with low barrier access to a full range of services including mental health and substance use supports, primary care, education, employment, housing and other social services all through youth-friendly access points. YWHO services are designed to improve experiences and outcomes for youth by: Increasing access to rapid, low-barrier services; Reducing transitions by providing care in one location; and providing tailored, high-quality programs co-developed with youth to meet their needs.
Responsibilities:
- Create and maintain a developmentally appropriate, non-judgmental, non-stigmatizing, safe, and welcoming hub atmosphere.
- Provide support that is consistent with YWHO values to youth, their families and caregivers as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Work with youth and families to better understand their service needs and goals.
- Support a seamless experience of care for youth and families, including the transition between various service pathways internal to the Hub Network (Skills and Well-being, Community & Social Support, Clinical Services) as well as linking youth to resources in the community.
- Provide care coordination and community based support to youth with a number of care providers, including case conferencing to ensure strong communication among the care team.
- Accompanying youth to appointments and provide warm transfer supports to youth referred to services both in the hub and service providers in the community.
- In collaboration with youth, support the use of YWHO standardized measures to provide mental health and substance use services, monitor progress, and improve youth outcomes (focus on measurement-based care).
- Participate in YWHO Provincial Community of Practice
- Promote and encourage youth engagement and positive youth development in care planning and establish goals by fostering therapeutic relationships.
- Develop strong relationships with community services to build referral pathways for young people looking for specific services and supports such as housing, education, financial supports, employment, legal, basic needs, mental health, substance use, and physical health.
- Maintain accurate youth records including case note documentation, progress reports and all other functions within the electronic records management system.
Qualifications / Required Experience / Skills
- Lived/living experience as a young person with mental health and/or substance use challenges, which may include experience as a recipient of mental health and/or substance use services, is required.
- Undergraduate degree/diploma preferred (psychology, social work or relevant health or social science field).
- Registration with a professional body considered an asset (College of Nurses of Ontario, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers).
- 3-5 years of experience in healthcare or the social services sectors.
- 3-5 experience working with children, youth, families and caregivers.
- Comprehensive knowledge of issues related to substance use, concurrent disorders, mental health, trauma and recovery.
- Knowledge of the impact of social/cultural/economic factors on the determinants of health.
- Knowledge of community resources and services is considered an asset.
- Ability to work collaboratively within and across interdisciplinary teams and community partners.
- Familiarity with system navigation models and principles, an asset.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral).
- Ability to use strength-based problem solving, active listening, motivational interviewing, modelling and other coaching strategies.

Core Responsibilities
- Ensure the supported persons’ rights and choices are respected and advocate as needed
- Interact effectively with people we support
- Empower the people we support to be full citizens of their community
- Participate in the development, implementation, and documentation of Personal Service Plans
- Foster positive relationships with persons’ family members, professionals, co-workers, and members of the community
- Assist with activities of daily living and medication administration
- Excellent understanding of behaviour management principles and strategies including mental health needs
- Record the daily activity and personal health information (PHI) of the people we support on our case management database
- To work in conjunction with the people we support to ensure their home is clean and well maintained at all times, including daily food preparation and light housekeeping duties
You will have
- Grade 12 education
- Community Support Worker Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum 2 years of experience in community social services/health care
- Current Emergency First Aid/CPR and Food Safe certificates
- Previous behaviour management course/training
- Ability to effectively communicate (verbal & written) with team members, professionals, families, and community members
- Non-verbal communication skills
- Restricted class 4 driver’s licence (for Full-Time positions)
- Satisfactory Driver’s Abstract
- Criminal record clearance for children and vulnerable adults
- TB Test
- Moderate computer literacy
- Eligibility to work in Canada
