JOB SUMMARY
The Calgary SCOPE Society is a not-for-profit agency that supports individuals with developmental disabilities as well as mental health concerns. Our complex needs programs provide individualized programming and assistance to adults with challenging needs and high behaviours. We are seeking coverage for a variety of shifts, including daytime, overnight and weekend coverage. The Calgary SCOPE Society provides wraparound 24/7 support to these individuals in their homes and in the community.
Successful candidates hired into this program will receive specialized paid training and learning opportunities to develop, build on and maintain the skills necessary to support our individuals effectively. These will include CPI (Crisis Prevention and Intervention), ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) and more, in addition to client-specific training.
RESPONSIBILITIES
As a Community Support Worker, you will be responsible to:
Promoting individual goals and aspirations
Supporting daily activities (e.g., volunteer, paid employment, leisure interests, etc.)
Providing mental health and behavioral support
Providing support to maintain health (i.e., attending medical appointment, medication administration, liaising with pharmacy, emotional support, etc.)
Providing aspects of home maintenance and supporting daily routines (meal preparation, cleaning, laundry, etc.)
Supporting the development and maintenance of meaningful relationships
Supporting choice, rights and responsibilities and promoting and facilitating empowerment
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., diploma or degree in Disability Studies, Social Work, Psychology, etc.) along with 1 - 2 years of experience working with adults with developmental disabilities who have a dual diagnosis (an accompanying mental health diagnosis) or an equivalent combination.
Ability to work in a team environment. Strong communication and organizational skills and the ability to establish collaborative and effective relationships with others are required for this position.
Ability to work in a high-stress environment where crisis situations may be imminent, utilizing strong crisis intervention and prevention skills as well as sound knowledge of mental health diagnoses and developmental disabilities to react and intervene appropriately and safely.
Training in First Aid and CPR, CPI (Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training) and Vecova Medication Administration are an asset.
Provision of a criminal record check with vulnerable sector check is required for all employees prior to starting shifts.

Hours of shifts may vary depending on client, but typical shifts are as follows:
9 AM to 5 PM (day shift)
5 PM to 9 PM (evening shift)
9 PM to 9 AM (overnight shift, either awake for 12 hours or sleeping for 8 of 12 hours depending on client)

In this role, you'll provide immediate mental health and emotional support, lead trauma-informed individual and group sessions, teach coping strategies, and coordinate access to essential community resources. By fostering a safe and supportive environment, you'll help women build resilience and take the next steps towards stability and independence.
The role involves working in a domestic violence crisis shelter with a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, responding to urgent situations while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team. It requires emotional resilience due to frequent exposure to trauma and crisis, demanding adaptability and strong self-care practices.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Provide emotional support and guidance to stabilize mental health during shelter entry and stay
- Apply de-escalation techniques and supervise clients at imminent risk
- Complete mental health assessments to determine participant needs, risks and appropriate interventions
- Offer short-term supportive counselling and/or connect with appropriate community agencies
- Provide in-the-moment crisis intervention, including support on the crisis line when needed
- Develop trauma-informed intervention plans to help participants engage in other shelter supports
- Working collaboratively with other shelter support team members to provide holistic client centered case planning
- Coordinate, make referrals and facilitate connections to YW Calgary and greater community services
- Maintain clear and concise participant file documentation
- Assist with data collection and reporting as requested
- Provide consistent short-term follow up post shelter to ensure engagement with long-term supports
- Lead Individual and group sessions on mental health, coping strategies, resilience, self-care and wellness
- Educate and coach shelter staff on crisis intervention best practices
- Promote professional development by encouraging continuous learning and growth opportunities
- Implement evidence-based practices to ensure the highest standard of care and intervention strategies
- Integrate diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into one’s role, work, and engagement with others, as aligned with YW Calgary’s values and Practice Framework
- Understand and remain current with YW Calgary Health, Safety and Wellness policies, practices and protocols and ensure work is performed in alignment with YW’s culture.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- Diploma or degree in Social Work or other related discipline required
- Certifications in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and First Aid required, Brain Story, Indigenous Awareness or equivalent
- Knowledge and experience in crisis intervention, domestic violence, suicide risk assessment and mental health preferred.

Position Overview
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Family Support Worker to join our team at Emma House. Family Emma House Support workers (FSW) work at our Emma House location with expectant mothers or mothers whom have recently given birth, and are experiencing homelessness. FSWs provide emotional support, basic needs support for mothers and babies during their stay at Emma House and work collaboratively with Case Managers and other program staff.
This is relief position, and will require availability for varied shifts, including evening and overnight shifts.
What Youll Do
- Engage with mothers and children, develop rapport, offer support and model positive, compassionate and healthy professional relationships and boundaries.
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all babies/children and mothers residing at Emma House; provide crisis intervention when needed.
- Oversee daily house operations, and provide responsive care that supports the daily health and wellness needs of families during their stay at Emma House.
- Work collaboratively with Case Managers to assist in connecting mothers to appropriate resources and services.
- Work closely with Program Supervisor and Case Managers to support the family case plan, birthing plan, and housing plan closer to graduation.
- Provide child-minding support when necessary.
This position description reflects the general duties of the role, but is not intended to include all duties that may be inherent in the position. The Relief Emma House Family Support Worker may be asked to perform other duties as required or assigned.
What You Bring to Our Mission
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in Social Work, Child/Youth Care or related field of study is preferred; a combination of experience and other education may be considered.
- Experience working with at risk/vulnerable women, children and/or the homeless sector.
- Experience working in a congregate living setting is an asset.
- Knowledge of community resources and supports for mothers and children.
- Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, Excel and e-mail required.
- Excellent teamwork, collaborative problem-solving and team building skills.
- Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing in English.
- Must be availablefor varied shifts, including evening and overnight shifts.
