Provide skilled care for all activities of daily living in accordance with corporate policy, established standards and recognized nursing practice.
- Assist the registered staff in nursing diagnostic and therapeutic measures.
- Complete all documentation on time, and in accordance with corporate policies, ensuring that it is both current and accurate.
- Ensure a holistic, quality approach to resident care consistent with RhynoCare's Mission, Vision, Values and the Resident Bill of Rights.
- Provide assistance and support with resident meal service.
- Provides assistance and support with restorative nursing.
- Strategize, cooperate and conduct all activities necessary for the effective completion of resident care during his/her shift(s) and throughout the unit.
- Execute care in accordance with current legislation, best practices, corporate policies, and procedures.
- Participate in agency risk management program related to resident care.
- Participate in quality improvement program related to resident care.
- Perform timely, accurate and complete documentation for all care delivered on the assigned shift in accordance with legislation, regulations and internal requirements.
- Participate in new staff/student mentoring as assigned and promote educational opportunities to enhance their education.
- Participate in departmental, Interdisciplinary Team and resident safety meetings.
- Promote good understanding and teamwork between shifts, registered and unregulated staff and the collective agreement.
- Adhere to all health and safety procedures, including:
- Practice proper body mechanics in daily routines, particularly when using computer equipment.
- Use all equipment in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.
- Follow established safety procedures for lock outs.
- Wear proper safety equipment and PPE when necessary.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Proficient verbal and written English communication skills.
- Ability to speak a second language is considered an asset.
- Must meet one of the following criteria:
- Successful completion of a Ministry of Education approved PSW Training Program (minimum 640 hours) from a Community College or a school approved by the National Association of Career Colleges OR
- RN, RPN, Paramedic, Occupational Therapy, and Physiotherapy students with successful completion of Year 1
- Experience working as a Facility PSW is considered an asset.
- Negative T.B. skin test or chest x-ray.
- Current CPR (BCLS) and First Aid Certificate.
- Meet health surveillance requirements of the Public Hospitals Act.
- VSS within the past year of hire confirming absence of a criminal history/record.

Personal Support Worker (PSW) reports to the Director of Care and provides residents with physical and personal care needs to a high quality standard and with sensitivity. Additionally, the PSW demonstrates commitment to resident safety by providing high-quality care in accordance with the organization's vision and mission.
Responsibilities:
- Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) according to the care plan
- Monitor residents’ well-being and report changes to the RPNs, documents accordingly, and responds to medical emergencies
- Monitors resident safety in accordance with plan of care; implement and follow precautionary and preventatives measures (eg. skin impairment, falls, expressive behaviours) sets out in the care plan.
- Document each task of daily activities and care provided in electronic health records accurately and in a timely manner. Thoroughly documents Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
- Ensure the health and safety of all individuals within the home by following procedures and protocols
- Participates in resident care conference/team meetings and provides information to aid in the development of care plans.
- Displays a sense of spontaneity and ability to change the moment positively for people
- Ensures that personal care items are clean, labeled and accessible to residents.
- Use of Gentle persuasive approach (GPA) when dealing with and managing residents with expressive behaviours
- Must have knowledge of and adhere to practices of safe transfers; safe use of ceiling and other mechanical lifts in accordance with the policies of the Home.
- Maintain a clean, safe and secure environment for residents during provision of care.
- Assists with meal service and nourishment delivery to residents and provides feeding assistance as required.
- Any and all other tasks as assigned
Qualifications:
- The qualifications needed to join our family are as follows:
- PSW Certification from a program that is at least six hundred (600) hours in duration counting both class time and practical experience.
- Experience in Retirement or long-term care preferred
- Current CPR and First Aid certifications are preferred but not mandatory
- Mentally and physically able to perform duties as assigned
- Organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to lift up to 20 lbs
- Individual and teamwork skills
- Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
- Ability to work from the heart and make others smile
- Clear vulnerable sector screening (w/ in last 6 months), recent TB test results (w/ in last 6 months) or Chest X-Ray (w/ in last 1 yr), and two supervisory references required

Our PSWs know our residents and are quickly able to identify and report any changes in the resident’s well-being to the Registered Practical Nurse or Charge Nurse.
To be successful as our new Personal Support Worker (PSW), you will:
- Hold a valid PSW Certificate that is 600 hours or greater and meets the vocational standards established by the Ministry of Training, Colleges & Universities, the standards established by the National Association of Career Colleges, or the standards established by the Ontario Community Support Association OR Experience working as a PSW, PCA or equivalent based on international education and have the ability to acquire the above mentioned if requested to do so. Additional document may be requested during the initial screening process.
