General Description

Working closely with COREs Environmental Leadership Team, the Environmental Planner / Project Lead role is integral to the Environmental Division's continued growth and long-term success. Team members who perform this role will meet the role expectations as outlined.

The Work

Overview

  • Managing or co-managing assigned construction, pipeline, municipal, solar, and public infrastructure projects.

  • Preparation of high-quality scientific and technical reports, including environmental protection andregulatory submission documents such as:
    • Environmental Construction Operations (ECO) plans
    • Environmental Protection Plans (EPP)
    • Care of Water (COW) plans
    • Erosion and Sediment Control (ESCP) plans
    • Environmental Risk Assessments
    • Biophysical Impact Assessments
    • Wildlife surveys (breeding bird, migration, amphibian, raptor, species at risk)
    • Wildlife mitigation plans
    • Wetlands Assessments
    • Fish Habitat Assessments
    • Hydrological Assessments

  • Assessing and managing potential risks and liabilities associated with assigned projects

  • Assisting with ongoing development of internal processes, including environmental/ regulatory scoping tools, quick reference guides, checklists, and project templates
  • Identifying additional opportunities to help our clients improve their regulatory compliance outcomes

  • Preparation of project budgets, scopes of work, and detailed proposals


Spatial Data Interpretation / Analyzing

  • A basic understanding of the land survey systems in Western Canada
  • Utilizing various GIS/mapping platforms to analyze and interpret datasets
  • Understanding which datasets to utilize for interpretation
  • Reading and understanding survey/engineering plans and the information within them


Regulatory Requirements

  • Understanding which Directives/Acts/etc. apply to a project
  • Finding and interpreting of the content within regulatory documents and how they apply to a project
  • Recognizing when a project does not meet a regulatory requirement and bringing it to the attention of the Project Lead/SME with mitigation options
  • Creating and submitting permitting applications to the regulator(s)
  • Potentially communicating with the regulator


Technical Writing

  • Utilize a strong command of language, grammar, and style to produce clear, concise, and readable content
  • An understanding of when to use technical or regulatory wording and when to use plain language
  • Ability to conduct thorough research, gather data, and interpret technical information to understand and explain complex topics
  • Ensure accuracy and clarity in data, technical terminology, and formatting, which is critical in technical documentation
  • Proficiency with the software being utilized, including applicable templates and GIS software
  • Reviewing reports for consistency, grammar, formatting, and technical accuracy
  • Ability to manage time effectively to meet project deadlines, especially when juggling multiple projects/deliverables


Requirements

  • Industry knowledge: Experience level working knowledge with the British Columbia (i.e. BCER, MEP) & Alberta regulatory system (i.e., AUC, AER, EPA).
  • Technical: An aptitude for technical skill sets leads to a deeper project understanding and an ability to contribute to various projects and provide regulatory and scientifically based solutions.
  • 10+ years of applicable environmental consulting experience
  • Professional Designation:A professional Biologist designation or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment is mandatory (P. Bio.,R.P. Bio, etc.)

The Role

What I will be doing?

  • Ensure all Ultrasonic Technicians follow safety policies and procedures.
  • Assign daily work tasks and provide ongoing guidance to employees.
  • Develop, oversee, and complete daily work plans.
  • Train new employees as directed by the Operations Supervisor.
  • Audit pre-shift inspections, cleaning solution sampling, and FLRAs.
  • Conduct daily toolbox talks and task observations.
  • Report safety concerns to the Operations Supervisor.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of timesheets and material tracking sheets.
  • Operate and maintain high-pressure water blasting equipment, pressure washers, cranes, forklifts, wastewater treatment systems, and ultrasonic vessels.
  • Perform troubleshooting and preventive maintenance on key equipment.
  • Oversee vessel mobilization and demobilization.
  • Maintain and update client information in PLM software.
  • Manage facility maintenance, repairs, and upgrades, including contractor coordination.
  • Communicate professionally with clients and vendors.
  • Maintain compliance with Alberta regulations and company policies.
  • Monitor performance standards, including TRIF rating and KPIs.
  • Identify and document non-conformances on SCRs.
  • Ensure adherence to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards.

CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education or university degree in or related to GIS
  • Minimum 6 years experience in creating maps in ESRI ArcGIS 10.x, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online
  • Experience in creating technical schematics in AutoCAD
  • Experience with ArcGIS Collector and Survey 123 apps
  • Experience in providing geomatics support forthe oil and gas and/or environmental industry(i.e. Phase I, Phase II, Remediation Reporting Biophysical Applications habitat suitability mapping, soils maps, engineering design drawings etc.)
  • Proficient with MS Office programs

  • Experience in understanding publicly available data sets and data sources commonly used to support environmental projects in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia
  • Experience in providing geomatics support in the environmental industry in Ontario is considered an asset


RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage and grow a team of junior and intermediate Geomatics Analysts to meet business needs
  • Maintain and improve upon company standards and procedures to meet the needs of the business and operations
  • Care and control of the QA/QC program for the geomatics team
  • Provide solution-based options to enhance current GIS systems and software utilized for project execution
  • Manage geomatics workflow to maximize resources and ensure efficient and timely provision of geomatics services to the lands, environment, and engineering teams at Vertex
  • As workloads dictate, support the geomatics team through provision of technical skills (compile spatial data sets, analyze data as required, develop figures, maps and project related geospatial data)
  • Collaborate with management and other technical teams at Vertex to ensure consistent and high-quality geomatics services are maintained and enhanced
  • Demonstrate the ability to meet tight deadlines and work under pressure
  • Provide training and mentorship to intermediate and junior Geomatics Analysts
  • Other duties as directed by your direct supervisor or manager

  • This position will be based out of either Calgary, AB or Sherwood Park, AB. Other regional office locations may be considered depending on the candidate.
