Job DescriptionThe Senior Medical Lab Technologist reports to the Clinical Services Manager, Laboratory Medicine and works under the supervision of the Charge Technologist, Pathology and Medical Authority for Pathology for day-to-day tasks/duties.
Accountabilities:
- Performs all front-line technical functions, operation and maintenance protocols, quality assurance and quality control procedures; monitors for compliance
- Designate for Charge Technologist/supervisor ; resource for front-line staff
- Act as subject matter expert and technical resource for staff
- Collaborates with peers, direct supervisors, professional leader and quality manager; using the organizational reporting structure to address conflict and develop solutions prior to escalation
- Participates in the development and review of technical procedures
- Maintains strong working knowledge of current technical methodologies, performance standards and evidence-based practice
- Actively involved in the inventory management process; orders product, ensures stock rotation, identifies and reports non-conformances (e.g. unacceptable, expired or discarded products)
- Monitors for compliance to policies and procedures; coaches, educates and trains as required
- Monitors and reallocates resources to meet performance expectations and operational needs
- Participates in process validations and qualification protocols for laboratory equipment, reagents and supplies
- Coordinates technical and safety training for staff; ensures hazardous tasks lists are current and communicated
- Provides input to staff performance appraisals
- Enters non-captured service and non-service recipient workload units
- Participates the management and reporting of EQA testing
- Manages workload effectively and efficiently; identifies, reports and solves problems, meets deadlines and prioritizes
- Follows departmental policies, processes and procedures in accordance with established regulatory and accreditation standards
- Participates in the investigation, corrective action and follow-up for all non-conformances; discordant results, complaints, employee incident reports
- Evaluates episodes leading to withholding of results; performs look back trace back procedures, implements corrective actions; authorizes the resumption of testing and releasing of results
- Attend meetings and delivers departmental huddles as required
- Accountable for meeting deadlines when completing action items, skills assessments and other technical projects
- Graduate of an accredited medical laboratory technology program or equivalent education
- Must be registered with the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario
- Minimum three years experience as a laboratory technologist required
- Experience with hospital information systems, laboratory information systems and Paradigm document control software required
- Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills
- Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to mentor and coach staff; strong conflict resolution skills
- Management and supervisory courses an asset
- Proven skills and competence in departmental policies, processes and procedures
- Experience in developing policies, processes and procedures, duties and responsibilities
- Working knowledge of departmental budgets and schedules an asset
- Experience coordinating workflow and prioritizing in a fast-paced environment
- Demonstrate excellence in organization and time management skills to meet deadlines
- Demonstrate mature judgment and initiative and ability to effectively problem solve
- Strong ability to multitask, be assertive, flexible and responsive to conflicting priorities
- Must possess strong motivation skills as well as being self-motivated

We are seeking qualified individuals with experience working in a diagnostic health care environment. The roles in our facilities are fluid. Depending upon the day, the appointment bookings and demand for services, you may be called upon to perform as either Medical Radiation Technologist or an X-Ray/ MRI/ CT/ Nuclear Technologist as per your current certification. These are fluid roles within our workplace.
Responsibilities:
· Maintain all company standards including quality of work and results, test procedure and methodology, turn-around time, confidentiality of test results; assist and/or provide training as required.
· Ensure patients comfort and confidence in the competence and professionalism of the centre and its staff.
· Prepare reports for the information; answer technical questions, carrying out any necessary information Demonstrate knowledge on company procedures and standards; including procedures relating to the performance and documentation of examinations, booking system reporting procedures, turn-around time, equipment, and methods used in other company centers, and the amount of training required to attain familiarity.
· Operates and maintains equipment via participation in Quality Control and Quality Assurance tests.
· Ensure personal development through training courses and/or training appropriately to upgrade technical skills, abilities and knowledge.
· Perform additional duties and responsibilities that may be assigned and ability to work in various shifts.
· May perform X-ray, radiographic or fluoroscopic, computerized tomography (CT) or mammography to produce imaging and high-quality diagnostic radiographs via practice of radiation safety procedures and adherence to a strict code of aseptic techniques. (Only applicable to X-Ray and CT Technologists)
· May perform radiation detection through gamma cameras, scanners, scintillation counters, tomodensitometers and ionization chambers, to acquire data for use by nuclear medicine physicians in the diagnosis of disease. (Only applicable to Nuclear Technologists)
· May perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning to produce anatomic images of the human body for diagnosis by radiologists of disease or injury. (Only applicable to MRI Technologists).
Qualifications, Experience & Requirements:
College, CEGEP or other non-university certificate or diploma from a program of 1 year to 2 years
Work Experience: 1 to less than 7 months
Current and valid Certificate of Registration with the Association of Medical Radiation Technologists of the relevant
province.
Knowledge and proficiency in general nuclear medicine procedures.
Maintain current CPR and First Aid certificate.
Maintain competence in position by attending staff meetings.
Strong organizational and interpersonal awareness & skills, good command of the English language and excellent
communication skills, accuracy, dependable, flexible, judgement, reliable and team player, attention to detail.
Ability to work varying shifts and ability to work independently as well as part of a team and in a fast paced
environment.
Self-evaluate performance, establish personal objectives and participate in yearly staff performance review.

Key Responsibilities
- Ensure the radiology equipment and auxiliary equipment function correctly and are maintained properly.
- Follow documented safe operating procedures for the equipment.
- Practices effective radiation protection, infection control, and safety techniques as applicable.

Qualifications

- Must be able to comprehend, speak, read and write English fluently and be understood by others with whom they are in contact
- Good organization skills and ability to assume responsibility.

- Excellent communication skills and ability to work under pressure.
- Demonstrated problem solving and critical analysis skills.
- Ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy when dealing with patients, staff and physicians.

- Checks unverified laboratory results for accuracy prior to verification; investigates unexpected abnormal and/or spurious results according to laboratory policies, processes and/or procedures

- Accessions specimens; investigates non-conformances on irretrievable specimens prior to processing and according to laboratory protocols
- Grossing of specimens which includes examining, describing, dissecting, and measuring of small and small/big gross surgical specimens of varying tissue types
- Embeds processed tissue; checks embedding log and investigates errors/discrepancies
- Cuts paraffin wax tissue blocks using microtome; makes, labels, stains and cover slips slides as appropriate
- Operation and maintenance of IHC stainers and other equipment
- Frozen sections
- Correlates cut slides to tissue blocks
- Cuts deeper levels as required
- Files and archives slides and blocks
- Assist with MLA duties as required
- Medical laboratory technologist with CSMLS certification
- Minimum five years recent experience in general histology in a hospital setting
- Immunohistochemistry experience is preferred
- Current registration with CMLTO in good standing
- Ability to distinguish colors
- Comfortable dealing with surgical and autopsy specimens and the deceased
- Strong medical terminology is required
- Strong multi-tasking, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational and communication skills; strong interpersonal skills
- Proven ability to be a team player; able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Knowledge of LabLion, Meditech, Paradigm and other Microsoft Office computer system would be an asset
