THE OPPORTUNITY
The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for the normal daily functioning of the Laboratory Department. This position is responsible for the design, implementation and continual improvement of the Quality Management System in the Laboratory.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensure laboratory technologists and laboratory assistants adhere to departmental policies, procedures and processes.
- Maintain a high level of technical and theoretical expertise.
- Work within a team environment demonstrating excellent communication, time management and interpersonal skills.
- Development and maintenance of current policies, procedures, processes, and forms to ensure they are relevant and up to date and consistent with the overall objectives of the laboratory and external regulatory agencies.
- Maintain adequate reagents, inventory and supplies and ensure proper utilization of consumables with minimum waste.
- Ensure performance of routine operation, maintenance, and calibration of necessary equipment.
- Maintain equipment records on all instrumentation in compliance with procedure and external regulatory agencies.
- Maintain a quality control program for all testing done in the department.
- Ensure timely completion of workload in the department.
- Ensure standards for clear and accurate reporting of all results, including abnormal and critical results.
- Investigate and respond to discrepancies and incidents.
- Identify issues and assist in developing solutions to correct identified deficiencies.
- Complete direct observation on all laboratory employees annually in conjunction with senior technologists
- Provide support to staff that does not require management intervention.
- Responsible for leading in the design, implementation and continual improvement of GBGH Laboratory Quality System.
- Active participation and contribution in Hospital and Unit/Department Quality Improvement activities and initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:
- Successfully completed Bachelor of Science or equivalent or related field.
- Initial certification in Medical Laboratory Technology by the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Scientists (C.S.M.L.S) required.
- Member in good standing of College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO).
- Active membership and participation in associated societies, user or peer groups required.
- Successful completion of a recognized Quality Management certificate program.
- Minimum experience of six (6) years experience in core laboratory.
- Minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience.
- Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with a diverse workforce, and client population and community.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills both written and verbal.
- Demonstrated ability to motivate, lead and mentor staff.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize and multi-task.
- Demonstrated project management skills.
- Demonstrated knowledge of quality control.
- Demonstrated computer skills in Word, Excel, Power Point and Omni
- Demonstrated ability to work independently or in a team environment.

Job Description
The Medical Laboratory Technologist 1- Hematology/Histology/Chemistry/BTS/PFT/ Microbiology assists with the diagnosis and treatment of patients by performing a variety of standard examinations and procedures in hematology; responsible for organizing time and resources for the effective conduct of laboratory examinations and procedures; participates in the Department's rotation of duties including evenings, weekends, holiday schedules, and performs other related and allied duties.
Duties will include but not limited to :
- determining required procedure by reading requisitions and seeking clarification if necessary from physicians and paramedical staff;
- providing information to patients, physicians and paramedical staff regarding the regimes associated with various tests and specimen collections;
- obtaining venous and capillary blood samples required for blood tests and analyses using prescribed aseptic and venipuncture techniques;
- preparing specimens for test procedures by centrifuging, separating, measuring and pipetting precise quantities required for analytical procedures;
- analyzing specimens to determine the existence and/or proportion of constituent biological/chemical components and other specimen characteristics according to standard manual and automated procedures;
- preparing and using standard and control solutions to calibrate equipment and ensuring proper operation in accordance with test and quality control procedures;
- assisting physician at bone marrow aspirations by immediate processing of specimen;
- using computerized data management and reporting systems in an efficient and effective manner;
- forwarding test and analysis results to the requesting physician or to the patient's location;
- other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Medical Technologist Certificate from an approved school of Medical Technology.
- Must have current registration with C.S.M.L.S at the Registered Technologist level.
- Must be licensed or eligible for licensing with the College of Allied Health Professionals of PEI
- Must have successful completion of a recognized Medical Laboratory Technologist Program from an accredited institution
- The ability to work independently and with others is essential
- Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential.
- A good previous work attendance and record.
Other Qualifications:
- Recent training and/or experience in hematology is preferred.
- Additional relevant education and experience will be considered an asset.
Incentive Information:
Salary Range: $37.05 – $50.76 per hour
Bi-Weekly Hours: 75 hours Bi-Weekly / Rotating Days, Evenings, Nights and Weekends
