Position Overview:
We are seeking an Electrical Designer or Engineer to join our Electrical New Product Development (NPD) team. In this key role, you will manage engineering design tasks and projects focusing on electrical systems, guiding them from concept through to production implementation. Your expertise will encompass all related design activities, including calculations, communication, documentation, and material requirements.
Key Responsibilities:- Executes and completes engineering design tasks and project assignments in support of prototyping/testing & product development activities per NPD product development processes.
- Coordinates own tasks to ensure deadlines are met per project schedule and applicable lead times. Includes maintaining task status, task progress and communicating risks to task scope change.
- Performs engineering calculations and analysis to ensure compliance with design criteria and all applicable standards and regulations.
- Checks engineering documents, instructions to service, shop floor instructions and other documents as authorized.
- Common functions with other NPD Roles:
- Responsible: Creation of engineering designs that meet customer specifications, technical summaries, other contract documents and any applicable standards or industry best practices. Ensures designs meet performance, buildability, design efficiency and align with outlined design philosophy.
- Responsible: Completes controlled testing of components and system to meet contractual obligations, vendor requirements (SAA), ensure product reliability, performance and verify component fit.
- Responsible: Completes engineering drawings and release documents in accordance with engineering procedures.
- Responsible: Interacts with suppliers (which may include end customer) on design-related issues during development that may require an end goal of supplier application approval.
- Responsible: Performance of project design reviews.
- Responsible: Creates other technical documents such as instructions to service, Shop Floor Instructions as authorized.
- Supports: Documentation of the appropriate use of supplier's product for the application from review of supplier's requirements and intended operation and developmental discussions for fitness of use in the New Flyer product including supplier application approval and any associated testing and customer configuration audits.
- Supports: Completes product launch integration to production, quality assurance, customer service support and other departments as directed.
- Consults: Product requirements and technical content are developed and maintained in accordance with specifications.
- Consults: Bid documents such as customer specifications, technical summaries, supplier quotations, approved equals. and others are reviewed for appropriate interpretation and compliance.
- Consults: Performance of applicable FMEA and Hazard Analysis exercises.
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology Diploma or an equivalent combination of education, skills and experience will be considered.
- Registered (or eligible to be registered) as a Professional Engineer or Certified Engineering Technologist.
- Five or more years of design experience, and demonstrating ability to achieve performance objectives.
- Proficient in designs involving multiplexing systems for heavy-duty vehicles, CAN bus networks, and sensor interfacing.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and familiarity with engineering analysis tools.
- Working experience in electrical integration of automotive systems for heavy-duty buses and coaches, including communication between various vehicle subsystems, and compliance with automotive standards such as SAE J1939, ISO 11898 and ISO 26262.
- Strong multitasking skills in a dynamic work environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Collaborative problem-solving abilities and a strong sense of teamwork.
- Self-motivated with the capability to work independently.
- Ability to manage projects efficiently and effectively is an asset.

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Designer (or Technologist) to join a dynamic EPC firm based in Calgary, AB.
As an Electrical Designer, you’ll join a firm that provides multi-disciplinary engineering solutions across industries such as oil & gas, petrochemical, refining, and manufacturing. With a strong focus on innovation, quality, and efficiency, the team works on projects of varying complexity and scale, ensuring successful project execution with cost-effective solutions.
What you’ll do as an Electrical Designer:
- Lead the electrical design team by mentoring young engineers, driving both conceptual and detailed design work while coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams.
- Develop comprehensive electrical drawings and specifications by reviewing P&IDs and package/skid drawings, producing drawing packages that include area classifications, single line diagrams, cable schedules, schematics, and layout plans.
- Oversee technical aspects by reviewing design documents, calculations, studies, specifications, and datasheets, and by serving as the discipline checker for all related calculations and drawings.
- Manage procurement and contractual responsibilities by understanding construction contract documents, evaluating RFQs, creating purchase orders, and handling general equipment requisitions.
- Provide essential support through the creation of wiring details, offering field construction assistance, and interfacing directly with clients to address design and technical issues.
- Serve as the project engineer on projects of various scales by tracking contract requirements, developing technical passports as needed, scheduling tasks to ensure quality delivery, and actively engaging in project interfaces.
What you’ll bring as an Electrical Designer:
- Possess a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology.
- 7+ years of electrical design experience in the oil and gas and heavy industrial sectors.
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Canadian Electrical Code, with additional exposure to the NEC as a beneficial asset.
- Maintain sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal abilities, and the capability to lead a small design team.
- Possess expert knowledge of LV and MV switchgear, MCCs, transformers, as well as motors, VFDs, and cables.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement the design concept through the preparation of electrical detailed design, production drawings and schematics for industrial, commercial, and/or institutional buildings using AutoCAD and/or Revit.

- Perform general duties as required such as printing, plotting, scanning, conversion, quantity take-offs and measurement.

Qualifications and Requirements:
- Post-secondary Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering or a related field required.
- 4+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering for industrial, commercial, and/or institutional buildings.
- Engineer in Training (EIT) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) is an asset.
- Work experience designing HV substations, fire alarms, lighting, emergency power generation, MV and LV distribution systems, and large electrical systems.
- Knowledge of applicable codes and standards such as the Canadian Electrical Code, Ontario Building Code (OBC), and the Canadian National Building Code (NBC), etc.
- Ability to meet deadlines/successful completion of deliverables.
- Excellent time management skills with the ability to work under pressure on various tasks.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
