We are looking for an Electrical Designer (12 Month Contract) for our Peterborough, Ontario site.
BWXT NEC's Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing, parts supply, and service of on-power refueling, reactor maintenance, and nuclear medicine delivery tooling sold around the world. Reporting to the Design Services Manager, responsibilities of the designer performing this role include supporting the technical direction for the overall project, interfacing with both external and internal customers including the Instrumentation and Controls Engineering department. Electrical designers participate in the development and drafting of designs for automated and semi-automated equipment.
The Design Services department uses such tools as AutoCAD®, AutoCAD Electrical®, IntEC® and Inventor® to create concept drawings, detailed designs, elementary drawings, BOMs, wiring diagrams and can also provide design replacement solutions for obsolete components such as relays, motors and circuit cards.
**RESPONSIBILITIES:**
+ Develop concept designs into detail drawings & bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies or product using CAD packages including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, and Autodesk Inventor.
+ Work in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment with teams of Professional Engineers and Technologists.
+ Produce and update general assembly drawings, interconnection block diagrams, functional block diagrams, cable assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, wiring lists, and bills of material.
+ Selection of instrumentation, control, and power components based on Engineering requirements.
+ Participate in design reviews and occasional customer review meetings, providing resource information and design input.
+ Liaise with customer design and operations personnel to gather site-specific design information.
+ Assist others on specific projects.
+ Accountable for cost and schedule on assigned projects.
**REQUIRED:**
+ Electrical/Electronic Engineering Technology diploma.
+ AutoCAD experience required, AutoCAD Electrical and Inventor experience an asset.
+ Must have excellent written and verbal English communication skills understandable by a diverse audience

+ Possess working knowledge of fundamental drafting technique.

As an Electrical Designer, you will play an important role as part of a project team providing engineered electrical solutions to ensure performance and safety of engineered-to-order (ETO) automated laboratory projects.
**What you will contribute:**
**Team Collaboration**
+ Collaborate with multi-functional project teams that include the customer, Project Managers, Integrators, Mechanical Designers, Material Planning, Procurement, to plan and develop an ETO solution to achieve the agreed requirements
+ Promote a multi-functional team environment through design reviews at key stages of the projects
+ Support the pre-sales team as a technical consultant to support customer bids on new business
+ Work with vendors to review designs for manufacturability and select components for the system solution providing alternates due to obsolescence or supply chain constraints.
+ Support root cause investigations and resolution with internal team members and vendors
**Technical & Safety**
+ Perform power distribution calculations to specify the electrical and other applicable utility requirements for the customer to operate the automated system properly and safely
+ Create electrical schematics drawings for the system's communications, power distribution and safety circuitry using AutoCAD
+ Perform and detail Safety Risk Assessments on the system design for compliance with locally legislated requirements such as OSHA, CSA, CE, UKCA, UL, IEC or customer specific
+ Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM) pertaining to electrical assemblies for order release in the ERP system
**Continuous Improvement**
+ Help to improve design efficiency and consistency from project to project by maintaining the central design library for commonly used components and assemblies
+ Ensure design issues and/or problems are resolved effectively and accurately vetted by the multi-functional project team
+ Investigate, propose, and implement design improvements to enhance our product quality, value to our customers, or improve our profitability
**How will you get here?**
**Education**
+ Bachelor's degree, preferably in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
+ Professional Engineers of Ontario (P.Eng) license considered an asset

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Implement the design concept through the preparation of electrical detailed design, production drawings and schematics for industrial, commercial, and/or institutional buildings using AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • Design and prepare layouts and specification for lighting, electrical distribution (single line diagrams), emergency power distribution, fire alarm, wiring diagrams, riser diagrams, cable, and panel schedules.
  • Work alongside the project team and Project Manager to ensure quality and timely delivery of projects.
  • Create technical reports, documentation, calculations, and sketches.
  • Review shop drawings to confirm they adhere to project requirements.
  • Consistently follow company policies, procedures, and file structures/formatting.
  • Perform general duties as required such as printing, plotting, scanning, conversion, quantity take-offs and measurement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Post-secondary Degree or Diploma in Electrical Engineering or a related field required.
  • 4+ years of experience in Electrical Engineering for industrial, commercial, and/or institutional buildings.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) is an asset.
  • Work experience designing HV substations, fire alarms, lighting, emergency power generation, MV and LV distribution systems, and large electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards such as the Canadian Electrical Code, Ontario Building Code (OBC), and the Canadian National Building Code (NBC), etc.
  • Ability to meet deadlines/successful completion of deliverables.
  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to work under pressure on various tasks.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

General Description

In this role, you will be responsible in ensuring all electrical drawings are developed with the highest standard of quality and compliance before being released to the panel shop for fabrication. This role will also include reviewing electrical designs and providing guidance and direction for other team members.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with Automation and Project Managers to develop electrical schematics from preliminary concepts, sketches, engineering calculations, and specification sheets.
  • Assist with project proposals, project kick-offs, design reviews, FATs, and project closeout.
  • Thorough understanding of design and implementation of the Canadian Electrical Code for industrial automation control, power, and I/O panels.
  • Produce electrical schematics, wiring details, panel enclosure layouts and reports using E-Plan Pro Panel in accordance with established guidelines and client specifications.
  • Preparing the release of drawings for fabrication.
  • Conduct site visits/audits to assess existing infrastructure, including switchgear, MCCs, control panels, cable trays, etc., in support of the engineering team.
  • Provide support to Automation and Electrical Installation teams with electrical issues.
  • Review/approve design drawings and documents as per project deliverables
  • Continuous evaluation of the electrical design process to ensure best possible quality of design with lowest possible cost. i.e., evaluate methods and tools to develop systems that increase quality while reducing design time.
  • Develop and build up EPLAN as primary software package for electrical design
  • Develop and standardize EPLAN library, macros, reports
  • Routine correspondence with clients and all project stakeholders.
  • Internal correspondence within the department.
  • Technical clarification of any client queries/comments.
  • Facilitate with the CM/PM billing as per project milestones.
  • Travel up to 10%- 30%


Qualifications:

  • 1-5 years of design experience in machinery automation
  • Bachelors degree in electrical engineering
  • Experience with EPLAN software including:
  • EPLAN Electric P8 (schematics)
  • EPLAN ProPanel
  • Proficiency in creating 3D macros and using smart wiring/production features
  • AutoCAD Electrical
  • In-depth knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code.
  • Knowledge andunderstanding of relevant Design Guidelines & Statutory Requirements
  • Knowledge of machine safety
  • Knowledge of hazardous area classifications
  • Basic understanding of the equipment and systems installed in the manufacturing facilities for Food, Beverage, Pharmaceutical, Water and Wastewater
  • Microsoft 365 Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Valid G drivers license

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Designer (or Technologist) to join a dynamic EPC firm based in Calgary, AB.


As an Electrical Designer, you’ll join a firm that provides multi-disciplinary engineering solutions across industries such as oil & gas, petrochemical, refining, and manufacturing. With a strong focus on innovation, quality, and efficiency, the team works on projects of varying complexity and scale, ensuring successful project execution with cost-effective solutions.


What you’ll do as an Electrical Designer:

  • Lead the electrical design team by mentoring young engineers, driving both conceptual and detailed design work while coordinating with multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Develop comprehensive electrical drawings and specifications by reviewing P&IDs and package/skid drawings, producing drawing packages that include area classifications, single line diagrams, cable schedules, schematics, and layout plans.
  • Oversee technical aspects by reviewing design documents, calculations, studies, specifications, and datasheets, and by serving as the discipline checker for all related calculations and drawings.
  • Manage procurement and contractual responsibilities by understanding construction contract documents, evaluating RFQs, creating purchase orders, and handling general equipment requisitions.
  • Provide essential support through the creation of wiring details, offering field construction assistance, and interfacing directly with clients to address design and technical issues.
  • Serve as the project engineer on projects of various scales by tracking contract requirements, developing technical passports as needed, scheduling tasks to ensure quality delivery, and actively engaging in project interfaces.


What you’ll bring as an Electrical Designer:

  • Possess a Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology.
  • 7+ years of electrical design experience in the oil and gas and heavy industrial sectors.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the Canadian Electrical Code, with additional exposure to the NEC as a beneficial asset.
  • Maintain sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Exhibit strong verbal and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal abilities, and the capability to lead a small design team.
  • Possess expert knowledge of LV and MV switchgear, MCCs, transformers, as well as motors, VFDs, and cables.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in area classification, electric heat trace, and fire water systems.
