Responsibilities


  • Performing System Safety, Health Hazard and Hazardous Materials analyses during system/subsystem design for the purpose of ensuring vehicle crew safety, as well as quantifying and reducing the system’s impact to the environment.
  • Involved throughout the design process including requirements development, concept development, and final design development, presenting the results of these analyses and recommendations for improvements at internal and external design reviews.
  • Preparing & providing a variety of reports/Contract Data Requirements List (CDRLs) as required to support contract and testing requirements.
  • Collaborate with design teams to conduct hazard and risk assessments related to System Safety, Software Safety, Occupational Health, Hazardous Materials and Environmentally damaging material during vehicle design and work to mitigate
  • Use various safety analysis techniques to perform preliminary hazard assessments, such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), and Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA)
  • Evaluate designs to compliance with relevant safety standards and regulations (e.g., ISO 26262, MIL-STD-882).
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including design, systems and project engineering to proactively address safety concerns.
  • Evaluate customer requirements for Environmental, Safety and Occupational Health (ESOH) and determine vehicle compliance
  • Create and manage Hazard Logs, Risk Registers, and conduct Hazard Tracking
  • Support System Engineering Department in development of the System Specification Document ensuring safety, occupational health and hazardous materials requirements are captured
  • Support defining software safety requirements, complete software safety analyses and support software safety testing conducted by the Software Team
  • Support, as required, ESOH testing (Noise Testing, Air Quality Testing) to determine compliance to contract and/or system specification requirements
  • Support, as required, Safety, Occupational Health, Hazardous Materials and Environmental Impact reports to be submitted to the Customer


Requirements :

  • University Degree or College Diploma in a related field, such as in an ESOH discipline or equivalent (engineering, environmental, industrial hygiene, etc)
  • Strong experience in systems safety engineering.
  • Experienced in conducting MIL-STD-882 safety analyses
  • Knowledge of Safety Engineering Principles, Design Standards and able to assess if concept designs are likely to achieve numerical safety targets
  • Advanced knowledge of international and local safety, occupational health and environmental standards

We are seeking an entry-level Functional Safety Engineer to ensure the safety and reliability of our autonomous robotic vehicles. The role involves identification of hazards and risks using Systems Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), supporting definition of requirements, and implementing measures throughout the product development lifecycle. The Functional Safety Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate safety into the design, development, verification, and validation of our technologies, adhering to industry standards and regulations.
**Your role**
- Promote a culture of safety and compliance throughout the organization by fostering an environment where safety is prioritized and integrated into daily operations.
- Contribute to the development of functional safety concepts and requirements for autonomous vehicle control systems.
- Good understanding of Functional Safety lifecycles in general.
- Conduct safety analysis, including STPA, Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA).
- Collaborate with hardware and software engineering teams to ensure safety requirements are allocated to the design and development process.
- Review safety verification and validation activities, including safety testing and simulation.

**Your skills and experience**
4-5 years Experience in functional safety engineering, preferably in industries such as robotics, automotive, earth-moving or mining machinery, or agricultural equipment.
- Specific experience with functional safety using FMEA, and FTA.
- Proficient understanding of functional safety standards.
- Basic skills in identifying, assessing, and mitigating risks associated with functional safety like STPA, FMEA, and FTA.
- Knowledge of safety lifecycle processes and safety integrity levels.
- Proficient analytical and problem-solving abilities to address complex safety and compliance issues.
- Detail-oriented, with strong organizational and documentation skills to maintain safety records and compliance reports.

AECOM is seeking a **Life Safety Engineer - Airport** to join our team. This position is based on-site, out of Mississauga. We are seeking professionals to join our team to help us build one of the most advanced, sustainable and passenger-friendly airports in the world.
* Provides advice, guidance and subject matter expertise throughout the planning, design, and delivery of the program as it relates to life safety systems design and construction including compliance with all relevant codes and standards.
* Ensures that life safety systems design and construction comply with technical requirements, including design reviews, submittal reviews, and testing.
* Conducting Facility Alteration Permit (FAP) compliance reviews for all proposed renovations, alterations, maintenance work and new construction.
* Providing non-resident engineering expertise through field inspections during various stages of construction.
* Support the development of governance and process documentation with respect to the program's practices for life safety systems engineering.
* Assesses alternative technical proposals submitted by the contractor and provides feedback as to the feasibility of the proposal and alignment to GTAA requirements.
* Coordinates the technical elements of the program with respect to life safety systems engineering including establishing targets / goals for the program.
* Coordinates the interface between other engineering and architectural disciplines to ensure integration and coordination across programs, facilities, and assets.
* Reviews deliverables submitted by the contractor / designer and confirms compliance to the relevant requirements, codes, and standards.
* Monitors the input of the designer throughout the construction phase (RFIs, shop drawings, material approvals, mock-up approvals, punch list, etc.
* Provides Management level progress reports and briefings with respect to life safety systems design progress, issues, and opportunities.
* Coaching, mentoring, and supporting the career development of GTAA staff.
**Qualifications**
**Minimum Requirements:**
In order to be considered for this position, candidates must possess, at a very minimum:
+ University Degree in civil engineering with a focus on Life safety design.
+ 4 years of experience in mechanical design, construction and commissioning.
Demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education may be considered.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
* Minimum of 7 years experience in the design, construction and commissioning of industrial and commercial building, mechanical, or life safety systems within a major capital project / program.
* Aviation experience is considered an asset.
* Experience of defining functional and technical specifications in line with business requirements and thorough working knowledge of requirements management.
* Knowledge of Life Safety systems along with associated regulations, codes, laws, and technology limitations. Examples are:
* NFPA Fire Suppression System standards (NFPA 10, 13, 20, 25, 101, 409 & 415).
* CAN/ULC Fire System Standards (CAN/ULC S524, S536, S537 & S561).
* ISO 55001 Asset Management.
* Agency jurisdictions and their roles within the airport.
* National and Ontario Building Code.
* Knowledge of field construction, project management, and procurement methods and practices, including standard safety requirements, procedures in construction, document control, site acceptance testing, and factory acceptance testing.
* Advanced knowledge of computer applications including, but not limited to Microsoft Office 365, project scheduling software
, Maximo, ProjectWise, Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning, and MicroStation.
* Good stakeholder engagement and communication skills including the ability to facilitate meeting / workshops with large groups of stakeholders.
* Recognized degree in electrical, mechanical, controls systems engineering or another relevant engineering discipline. Relevant professional designation is considered an asset.

+ Registered as a Professional Engineer in your province of residence.
+ Experience in the nuclear field of fire protection engineering an asset (CSA N293, N393) and knowledge of NBCC, NFCC, provincial codes, various fire protection standards (UL, NFPA, CSA).
+ UL Solutions Integrated System Testing Certification (CAN/ULC-S1001) an asset.
+ Ability to design fire protection systems in Revit (AutoSprink RVT) or CAD (HydraCAD).
+ Knowledge of HydraCalc software
