Position Summary

Reporting to the Power Systems Studies Manager, the Power Systems Studies Engineer will play a key role in delivering power system studies including short circuit, coordination, arc flash studies, and ground grid analysis/design.

This is a full-time, permanent position based in Saanichton, BC.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct power systems analysis using ETAP

Perform short circuit, coordination, arc flash, and load flow studies, including the preparation of technical reports

Design and analyze ground grids, including step/touch potential and ground potential rise (GPR) calculations

Provide mentorship and training for junior staff

Offer technical support for engineering projects

Prepare cost estimates and technical proposals

Ideal Candidate Experience

Familiarity with medium voltage protection systems and relays (e.g., SEL, GE, ABB)

Understanding of substation control systems

Experience conducting power system studies (short circuit, load flow, arc flash, coordination) using ETAP or similar software

Knowledge of ground grid analysis using CDEGS or comparable software

Solid understanding of the Canadian Electrical Code C22.1 Part 1, IEEE 80, IEEE 1584, and CSA Z462

Skilled in technical writing and communication

Experience working with BC Hydro on power system studies, interconnections, or related matters

Hands-on knowledge of electrical power equipment

Qualifications

Legally eligible to work in British Columbia, Canada on a permanent basis

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering

Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC); EITs with 3+ years of experience may also be considered

Minimum 3 years of experience in power system studies

Strong commitment to workplace safety

Proficient in Microsoft Office applications

Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and work independently

Valid Class 5 driver's license

Your Role as Intermediate Electrical Engineer

In your role as an Intermediate Electrical Engineer, reporting to the Manager of Power Systems Engineering Services, you are responsible for performing engineering design and studies for various electrical distribution and substation projects (from 600V up to 230kV voltage levels). This includes preparing electrical protection and control design deliverables, and/or physical layouts for medium and high voltage substations. You will also establish project strategy, review drawings, and ensure elements of design and detailing adhere to jurisdictional requirements and will liaise with all key stakeholders.

Your Key Accountabilities

• Technical and Documentation

• • Independently prepares and verifies complex technical calculations.

• • Designs distribution systems utilizing client standards including bill of materials, yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, ground grid, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC and DC power systems and cable lists.

• • Designs protection and control scheme; including CT selection, relay wiring design and protection parameter selection using IEEE standards and applicable codes.

• • Prepares scope of work, estimates, schedules, budgets, specifications and reports.

• • Prepare new and modify existing relay drawings including relay panel arrangements, single lines, three lines, AC and DC schematics, equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.

• • Prepare new and modify existing reports/studies such as Protection and Coordination, Arc Flash, Load Flow and Grounding.

• • Leads site visits for data collection, and assessments and to provide recommendations for remedial action.

• • Leads and provides oversight for QAQC (quality assurance quality control) checks as
    required.

• • Completes and reviews project documentation and technical report development.

Qualifications

This role is accountable for the maintaining, upgrading, continued operation of the electrical, instrumentation and control, the computer systems of the facility and in keeping up to date with the latest technology in the field of electronics. This role trains and manages the electrical and process control staff in a participative management style to ensure the quality, quantity of work performance and development of subordinates meets the necessary requirements to meet operational goals.
**Key Responsibilities**
+ Directs the electricial and automation teams to assure the maximum operating efficiencies are maintained to meet minimal downtime, quality, volume, grade, yield, safety performance and cost control.
+ Work with operations and maintenance personnel to ensure that all plant systems are operating efficiently within their limits. Is accountable for the electrical, instrumentation, computer portion of the maintenance budget.
+ Is accountable for identifying potential capital projects and repair jobs, and new projects in his/her area.
+ Ensures the parts inventory for electrical, instrumentation, computer equipment is adequate to meet maintenance needs.
+ Provide technical support to ensure the Floor level controls, SCADA and other information systems provide the necessary information to operate efficiently.
+ Maintains a positive professional relationship with all contractors and equipment manufacturers.Ensures that the Plant Policies, Procedures and Union contracts are administered and followed in a fair and consistent manner.
+ Is responsible to attend and participate in training activities appropriate to the position and to incorporate acquired skills and knowledge.
+ Is responsible for identifying the training needs of subordinates, ensuring their participation in appropriate training activities, and reinforcing subordinate's skill development with coaching, feedback and recognition.
**Typical Education**
Bachelor's Degree from 4 year college or university, electrical engineering preferred.
**Relevant Experience**
3+ years related experience and/or training
**Required Certifications**
Industrial Electrician Red Seal preferred.
**Other Information**
Have experience and/or training in Programmable Logic Controller, Human machine Interfaces, Instrumentation (4-20 ma loops, 110 V AC, 24V DC, analog) and network communications; read and understand single line schematics and drawings.
