Job Description

We're looking for a Mechanical Systems Engineer  to support the development of mechanical designs and engineering systems across various products and programs within the organization.

As a member of this team, you will work collaboratively to develop high quality component, subsystem, and system designs capable of withstanding the harsh environmental conditions typical of military platforms.

You should possess a strong aptitude for problem-solving through the application of engineering principles in a multidisciplinary environment. A team oriented mindset and focus on achieving positive outcomes are essential.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Support the full product design life cycle from requirements definition and concept development through to production ramp-up. This includes prototype procurement, assembly, design verification and qualification testing, and ongoing manufacturing support.
  • Collaborate with Systems Engineers and Senior Mechanical Engineers to review, derive, and verify mechanical and environmental requirements from higher level system requirements.
  • Translate requirements to designers and review designs/drawings to ensure compliance.
  • Ensure your work adheres to integrated product design and specified requirements.
  • Provide technical direction on the creation of mechanical concepts, designs, and drawings of electronic enclosures and other mechanical systems for rugged environments using tools such as 3D solid modeling and simulation software.
  • Apply sound engineering principles to maintain high design quality.
  • Work closely with other design professionals (e.g., PCB Designers, Hardware Engineers, Systems Engineers), Supply Chain Management, and Manufacturing Engineering to ensure a smooth project workflow.
  • Deliver presentations at internal design reviews and other peer, management, or customer reviews.
  • Perform environmental engineering tests—such as thermal cycling, vibration, and shock in the test lab for both qualification and design verification purposes.
  • Support Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations.
  • Provide technical assistance to Integrated Product Teams (IPTs), especially during the transition to production.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing to develop and refine Assembly Methods Instructions (AMIs).
  • Review and approve Product Data Changes and the supporting justification data.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives focused on design quality and efficiency.
  • Mentor and review the work of junior designers.
  • Stay informed on the latest technologies, products, and market trends relevant to your area of work.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Science, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in mechanical design or systems development.
  • Experience with environmental testing (thermal, vibration, shock) and use of test equipment.
  • Strong analytical skills in structural, dynamics and thermal analysis
  • Working Knowledge in:
    • finite element analysis tools and techniques
    • Manufacturing processes and design for manufacturing and assembly
    • company, military, and/or industrial engineering standards and procedures (e.g. MIL-STD-810)
    • Engineering Development Framework (INCOSE System Engineering Principles)

  • Ability to read, review and interpret plans, drawings, specifications, codes and by-laws
  • Knowledge of the Canadian National Building Code (NBC), Ontario Building Code (OBC), and other applicable legislation/construction standards
  • Familiarity with LEED, ASHRAE, CEC, and energy-efficient design principles (LEED AP or CEM certification is an asset).
  • Experience in setup and maintenance would be considered an asset
  • Knowledge of computer systems and software such as Office Suite
  • The ability to be flexible with regards to work location and work schedule is a must, including the ability to travel away from home
  • Knowledge of electrical systems is an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with others
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and tact
  • Ability to plan, organize and manage work with minimal supervision and complete assigned duties accurately and within timelines

+ Own the mechanical design and drive all mechanical aspects of product development, following a rigorous design control process
+ Develop (and subsequently validate) product designs that are complete, thorough, and work together as a system, designing for performance, manufacturing, assembly, and reliability in the field
+ Develop assembly processes for complex electronic/optical products requiring precise alignment and tight control of geometric tolerances such as flatness
+ Perform hand calculations and review FEA to develop, assess, and optimize designs

Your Key Responsibilities - Leading a team of Mechanical Designers and Engineers to drive commonality and consistency across the project's mechanical deliverables. - Working with the Civil/Structural, Electrical/Instrumentation and Mining Design Leads to ensure deliverables that cross disciplines are consistent. - Interfacing with the client's technical representative to resolve design challenges and to deliver mechanical team reports. - Setting up the initial list of mechanical deliverables, defining the mechanical aspects of the schedule and defining the mechanical project design criteria. - Interfacing with the other design disciplines and leading the multi-discipline checks of the mechanical team's deliverables. - Resolving design conflicts within the mechanical team and bringing in support when required. - Participating in the definition of the project document templates and project CAD standards and then spot checking throughout the project period. - Supporting the Area Manager's role of managing schedule and budget through notification of over-runs and client requested changes to scope. - Audit the mechanical content of the material take-offs, equipment list, tie-point list, valve list, line list, and facility matrix to ensure consistency. - Auditing the mechanical content of drawings, models, calculations and documents to ensure consistency of assumptions and methods. - Directing requests for mechanical information to the correct responder during the procurement cycle, estimate cycle and construction cycle. - Develop costing in response to requests for quote, including developing lists of deliverables, estimating expenses and contributing to proposal written documents. - Deep knowledge of mechanical mining systems, methods, materials, and industry standards for a mining environment. - Understands all phases of engineering document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications. - Recognizes when technical problems are developing and leading the mechanical team to resolve the problem. - Ability to check others' work for accuracy and completeness, as well as across packages of mechanical deliverables. - Manages time to meet project budget and schedule. - Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought. - Ability to interpret sketches, drawings and other similar material. - Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite. - Experience using Navisworks or similar is considered a benefit. - Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the mechanical team. - Effectively discuss project issues with project leadership, clients and reviewing agencies.
